Took our 1994-968 to local Porsche specialist to diagnose power steering system leak. They report steering rack is shot and needs to be replaced. Indicating $4k for new if one can be found.
Other experience with this issue? Sources for rebuilt 968 steering racks?

Zims Autotechnik If I remember correctly Zims does their own rebuilds
944Store.com Another good source and educated people on the end of the phone for what you need.
I have never purchased a rack from any of the 3 but if I needed one this is where I would start comparing and talking. Good news is that this is the same rack for late 944/951 as well as 968 and your sources should be plentiful. Good Luck.

I had the rack in my 928 rebuilt by Howard Wright at European Classics in Atlanta: https://www.europeanclassicsatl.com
Their price is on the high side compared to what you'll see at most vendors but it's guaranteed for life if you follow their recommendations during installation (particular fluids to use, replace the reservoir, provide proof that you've followed instructions). If you're in FL, as your handle implies, you're not too far from them. It's also WAY less than what your dealer is quoting you, so you'll come out ahead.
Good luck

Has the reservoir ever run empty? Other than a leak, any weird sounds? How many miles?
Of all the known(to me anyway)wear parts in our 968's, I have never heard of the rack. PS pump, yes, yes.
Maybe others could chime in here, but is this common?
Thanks,

Years ago I replaced the rack on my 92 and I was advised to only buy the ZF OEM rack. As you've found out they cost almost 3x as much as the inexpensive racks, but I ended up going with the ZF brand and had no issues. According to the service records on my 93, the PO had the rack replaced twice within a 3 year period and only a few thousand miles. In both instances one of the inexpensive racks was sourced. Since I've acquired the car, I believe there is an issue with the rack that I have not completely traced. The last replaced rack has about 4K miles on it.

I have replaced the rack on my 92 with a rebuilt unit from Zim's. It has been running several years with absolutely zero issues. I have also used them in the past when I replaced the rack on my 944, same story. Quality people and products. If you're doing the work yourself, you'll put over $3500 back in your pocket compared to what you were quoted.

Thanks everyone for your constructive and instructive comments. We decided to go with a rebuilt unit.
This started as fluid on the garage floor, then growling when maneuvering and finally an empty reservoir.
I was hoping for lines, but steering rack the root cause.
