Default 968 Steering Rack

Took my 1994 - 968 to local Porsche specialist with power steering leak issue. Thought it was lines, but they indicate steering rack is shot. 119K on the odometer. Early info says new replacement (if one can be found) is $4K. Anybody else been down this path? Good source for rebuilt steering racks?

I've not used any of these, but with my steering rack having a slow/moderate leak, I've done a bit of research - here's three different sources for rebuilt racks:Rebuild Rack sources

944 Online - $699 with a $200 core charge ("Rebuilt Power Steering Rack done exclusively for 944online by a company with over 28 years in the business. It has a 1 year warranty and comes with a new reservoir, new boots ,new seals and new bushings.")

Zims - $335 with a $300 core charge

Remanufactured steering rack comes as a short rack with no tie rod assemblies.

"Although not outlined in the factory shop manual to do so, the age of these vehicles dictates that we STRONGLY recommend replacement of rack boots and reservoir. The reservoir contains an integral filter which, if not replaced, can contaminate new power steering components and cause premature failure of your newly remanufactured component. Zims may not be able to offer warranty replacement if system contamination has occurred."

3rd possible place for rebuild of power steering rack:

If you wind up going with any of these, please update here on how it worked out for you as I might not be too far behind!

This is where I bought the replacement rack for my ML. I have yet to install it so I can offer a review. I wanted to get a new replacement vs a rebuild/core because a rebuild kit is like $24 and I wanted to play around with the old one for ****s and giggles. Price was right and it arrived well packed and on time.

Check the drop down menu at th3 top because they offer several options with/without tie rod ends, etc.
