Question Loud POP in the Transaxle...??????

Hi,

I was going to work today and I made a right turn and accelerated to enter an on ramp to the highway and during acceleration there was a loud pop and then the car stopped accelerating. I coasted to a parking lot and parked the car. The left half shaft was still spinning slowly (engine was on and car was out of gear) and making a clunking noise as it spun. Has this ever happened to any other 968 or 944 owners????

Glad I am not the only one who thinks it is a CV joint.

If you do replace the CV joint, there are four of them, it would be best to do all four at the same time. I searched for rebuilt CV shafts when I repacked one of mine that had a recently torn boot in January but was unable to find a source for rebuilt shafts with joints. Be careful to mark the orientation of the CV shafts before removal so you can put them back how they came off!

There are instructions at http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/susp-01.htm

You will need a quality 8mm triple square socket to remove the CV shafts, I suggest you buy one of these

What does the forum think about getting the car off of the ground on jack stands or a lift, then removing both CV shafts and running the transmission without a load to verify it is working correctly?
