I forgot to give SirLapsalot kudos for identifying the Pontiac / Cosworth SD4. I thought I'd stump the crowd. So how are you familiar with this engine? It's a very rare bird indeed.

Peder,
The client wanted a dry sump engine and he provided the CEP oil pan. I had to clearance the pan in many areas before it would sit down on the gasket which was a big pain. I provided the SCP pump, fabricated the mount, and worked out the pump drive. I don't know where he'll mount the tank, nor how he'll route the lines. I also don't know what his state inspection involves, but I presume he's investigated that. Most US states are primarily interested in emissions and safety stuff like tires, brakes, suspension condition.

Jay,
The client sourced the double cam wheels - apparently from Cat Cams in the UK. It's a well engineered and beautifully crafted kit. You probably know they won't clear the hood, so a bubble of some sort will need to be added. The first of these dual pulleys I saw was on Chris White's personal engine.

SirLapsalot,
The Variocam arrangement on a stock 968 is quite effective given the production cam profiles and sophisticated intake manifold. More radical lobe profiles typically have a cam timing sweet spot and respond less to timing changes related to RPM, not to mention other potential issues with valve to piston clearance as the intake cam moves around. That said, I'm not aware of anyone who's tested a Variocam with performance cam profiles. Dyno pulls with the cams in the retarded position overlaid graphically over pulls in the advanced position would show the power differences, and show where to cross over. I suspect each position would require different tuning as well. I do believe a strictly street application would perform quite well with the stock 968 cams (turbo application), and with the Variocam operational.

Kevin,
The S2 belt tensioner was used since the 968 components were not on hand. I always used it on my race engines and never had a failure so I had no concern.

MM
Thank you for the reply. I have a race car 968 that came with the mechanical but I am looking to change it back to hydraulic. Given the option, would you stay with mechanical or go to the hydraulic as the 968 came from the factory?

Thank you

I think Spice ran them in their IMGA GTP Fiero's in back in the day. The squared shape of the front of the cam cover and distributor on the lower side of the block are unique so that made it recognizable.

You said special prize though...how about $3.00 off machine work when I find a 968 head to experiment with for my 3.0L build?

If you now have the S2 tensioner with 4V cast into the pivot arm, I'd just leave it alone (if it ain't broke....). If you're itching to get it back to the 968 arrangement, be sure you have the correct 968 plastic belt covers, and all the other 968 tensioner components. It may also be an opportunity to service both belts and all the rollers, depending on their age.

Engine left the shop today. A few more photos showing slick Hayward intake, powder-coated valve cover. Note the German colors.

Here's how I did a hall sensor for the cam sync. Couldn't use the Porsche system with the dual cam wheels.

I would love to see, and hear, this engine in a car.

Really cool looking engine Michael! Love the color touch!👍

Did you tune it? If so would love to see a powercurve.
Will it be streetable/pass emissions?

Hi Peder,
It's not yet tuned. There's still a bit to do on the chassis and with wiring where I'm not physically involved. Owner is now thinking primarily track, so unlikely emissions testing will be required. Certainly I'll post dyno results when they're available.

Damn, I was hoping for California CARB legal. I would WANT one, if I could...

Is the sensor positioned to use the sproket teeth for a signal? Or is there something on the backside of the wheel?

I countersunk a magnet in the back of the cam wheel. That way I could time the cam sync where I wanted it for ease of setting up the ECU.
