Default Check engine light blink codes?

So my check engine light came on a day or two ago.
Discovered here that if you hold the throttle wide open for three seconds, the light will blink a code.

If I'm reading this right, it's telling me there's a problem with the MAF.

What say you?
Here,s the link, in case the embed doens't work.

It’s a bit confusing to me, but it might be giving you code 21 which is air flow sensor.
Here’s a list of codes if you don’t already have it.

Porsche 968 Fault Codes
  • 11 Supply voltage
  • 14 Engine temperature sensor 2
  • 16 Throttle potentiometer
  • 17 Oil temperature sensor
  • 18 RPM signal
  • 19 Speed signal speedometer
  • 21 Air flow sensor
  • 23 Oxygen regulation
  • 24 Oxygen sensor
  • 26 Ignition timing change
  • 27 Opening winding of idle stabilizer
  • 28 Closing winding of idle stabilizer
  • 29 Activation of A/C relay
  • 31 Knock sensor 1
  • 32 Knock sensor 2
  • 33 Control unit faulty
  • 34 Hall signal
  • 35 VarioCam
  • 36 Idle CO potentiometer
  • 41 Control unit faulty
  • 42 Fuel pump relay (DME-relay)
  • 43 Tank ventilation relay
  • 45 Check engine warning lamp
  • 51 Injection valve cylinder 1
  • 52 Injection valve cylinder 2
  • 53 Injection valve cylinder 3
  • 54 Injection valve cylinder 4

Porsche 968 Fault Codes....
Yep, I found those earlier, and that's how I interpreted it.
So, I'm assuming the air flow sensor is the same as the 951-606-125-BX MAF, right?

I cant verify that part number works Wolfe (don’t know), but have you tried cleaning your MAF including the connector contacts?
It seems like I have seen at least a couple of threads discussing the MAF on our 968s. I remember reading about symptoms of dirty and malfunctioning MAFs and replacement advice. May be some information there if you can find the threads.

spray the wire with maf cleaner and allow it to dry. there is a burn off function after shut down so it is important to wait for this to complete if you have a failed start. 30 seconds or so.

if the code returns, I believe the rebuild company is in Colorado in the other thread. 300ish when I inquired a few years ago.

Picked up some MAF cleaner on the way home from Autocross today. Didn't drive AX, but went and hung out since it's been so long. Will do the job tomorrow and see what happens... it got to dark too quick when we got home.
If it returns, I'll probably pick up a new one instead of rebuild.

Speaking of rebuild... I'm assuming we have the "hot wire" type MAF, based on what I saw inside, and that the wire is made of platinum.

My spare MAF is off a Volvo, Bosch 0 280 213 012 I have run it without problems. The 968 MAF is the same as an Audi RS2 and very similar to the Volvo unit, compatibility has been tested:

You might be able to get a sensor to swap into your Porsche housing also, or get your MAF rebuilt by Injection Labs. The plastic grill of the 968/RS2 MAF housing does not seem to offer noticeably more restriction to the heavy screen on the typical MAFs. IF you can more easily find a Volvo MAF or an UrS6 MAF that'll get you down the road if you are having trouble finding the 968 MAF. There is a Chinese knockoff (with the heavy screen) that might work, one was checked out by Injection Labs in a previous thread. They are like $40 so maybe a good temporary or spare.

0280212016 Also looks like a far more common Volvo alternative. If nothing else the sensor could be swapped over.
Interesting details:

MAF cleaner seems to have worked.
So after that was done, I decided to pull the MAF off my 924S and clean it too. Only to discover it's quite different, and doesn't seem to operate the same way.
Nor does my Saturn, which is throwing all kinds of codes at me.

Oh well.

if you have a failed start, try not to attempt a restart until the MAF has completed the burn off cycle.

if you have a oiled gauze air filter, pitch it. they are known to cause this type of problem with hot wire sensors.
