Default 3.6T LSD, noise?

Does the 20/100 LSD on the 3.6T make noise when backing up while turning in a tight arc? Does it lock in this situation? I heard a noise at a recent test drive that suggested that the LSD was preventing one of the rear tires from turning, I was just somewhat surprised by it (again, when backing up in a driveway and turning). Is this normal?

My car does'nt make noise while turning tight arc, or while backing up. It did once a long time ago before I did a major tune up with all fluids changed.

Do a search on this same topic as when the wrong tranny fluid use will cause the noise. We talked about this not too long ago.

Regards,

Sonny

Change fluid in the transaxle. I use Mobil 1 75-90w gear oil, and it is never a bad idea to stop by a Chevy dealer and put in a pint of limited slip fluid. When the gear oil is bad, you will get some chatter at low speeds and tight turns. The clutchs in the LSD are not slipping smoothly as they should.

As noted by several other lists, mine did that until I got the transaxle fluid changed. Silent since then.

I have been told my "clunk" is a brake pad? It only happens in reverse, and its horrible. I have had my clutch replaced, twice unfortunately, and its still there? I would be intersted in what you find.

Bogey 1,

The LSD generated noise is easy to identify, because it makes a graunching noise while reversing AND turning at the same time.

If your car has had a 80,000 km or 48,000 mile service then be suspicious, as there is a transaxle oil change during that service, and someone may have put the wrong oil in. It happened to me at an OPC so I can speak from experience.

thanks for the info. My car is at ImagineAuto right now(porschephd), and he will be checking it out for me. Man, I am glad I saw this post! I see that your in New Zealand. We just booked a trip to New Zealand and Australia for late February. Really looking forward to seeing your beautiful country for a week or so. If your being chased by a tourist, you'll know its me but something tells me I wont be able to catch a local in a C2T!

Not sure about Australia, but February in NZ is the premium weather month.

Which parts of NZ are you visiting? The normal tourist route is fly into Auckland, then onto Rotorua, Christchurch finishing in Queenstown [one gorgeous town with lots to do].

Your chances of seeing a C2T in NZ are pretty slim, although there are 8 Turbo 3.6s in Auckland. Not bad for a city of 1.2m!

My 91 makes noise while backing up. I'm planning on changing all the fluids in the spring and that will likely take care of things

My '94 makes some ugly noises too when backing and turning sharp not under power. Picked up some Mobil 1 75W90 and am planning to change the fluid this weekend. Hopefully it will improve.

Teejae

There is an additive that should go in the LSD with the oil. Check it out.

I haven't heard of the additive. What is it?

The additive is around $10, but I'm not sure what it is.

Worth a call to the dealership to find out
