Default 965 ignition control modules

Hi.....I have a 1994 C2 Turbo (3.6) which came with some spare parts, one of which is an ignition control unit with part # 965 602 706 02. Ignition control unit with part # 965 602 706 01 was installed and the pressure sensor input line was disconnected (blocked at throttle body) when I received the car. I did not change anything and drive the car very hard on the track. It is performing very well.

My questions are:
1) Is there a large difference between the 02 and 01 ignition control units? Would performance be better with the 02 unit which seems to be the proper unit for this 965 model year? Can I dare replace the 01 with the 02?
2) What is the function of the pressure sensor input line?

Thanks in advance,

Arthur Pilla

I've found that Streather's documents have approximately a 50% accuracy factor on our cars so use as your own risk.

If you are talking about the ez69. My original unit was 01 and it was replaced with an 02, the only one currently available. Mine is a 3.3

Hi, Black_Hat thanks for linking me to Adrian's overview, which I realize I have already seen......rstarga I am talking about the EZ69 and your response seems to indicate that the 01 and 02 are interchangeable, at least on a 3.3. Did you notice any difference in performance between the 01 and 02? Do you know if the pressure sensor input line is connected.

The pressure line needs to be connected ,

with 400 mbar @ 3000 ignition timing is rpm 40 degrees +/- 3 degrees

with 1,750 mbar @ 3000 ignition timing is rpm 21 degrees +/- 3 degrees

The 01 showed as superseded by the 02 and 01 discontinued. It plugged right in with everything connected the same. No drivability or performance differences I can detect. Again on a 3.3.
I'm sort of surprised the 3.6 has an 01 mounted. These puppies are rare and go for around 3900 so hang on to them. They are not rebuldable in any way.

Black_Hat......Although I didn't realize it, the pressure sensor line has been open to the atmosphere ever since I owned the car. We discovered this when the engine came out for freshening this winter. So the EZ69 sees a constant (around) 1000 mbar, which I guess means ignition timing may be constant over the rpm range at maybe 25 degrees. The car ran very strong like that for years on the track and a recent dyno pull to check for safe boost with sensor line still disconnected showed 391 hp at the wheels. Safe boost is 0.7 bar.

I had a '79 930 years ago and I know we locked the timing at 25 degrees......wonder if that was the intent here?

in that case you will lose advance off boost at cruse.

the car will have more pep with the pressure hose connected as you will have up to 40 degrees advance off boost

attached is a picture I got from someone else showing the timing map / graph
this matches what I saw with my stock EZ-69 before switching over to aftermarket electromotive crank fire dual plug. The graph shows the big advance off boost ..up to 40degrees ...the the flat line 24/25 degrees under boost

The 964 turbo has 3 reference teeth on the flywheel and I saw terrible resolution
when checking timing 2 higher RPM ...this is one reason Porsche was so conservative with 24/25 degrees under boost

Thanks Black_Hat!! Can't believe I've been missing the off-boost advance all this time. Connecting the pressure sensor hose ASAP........will report back after my next track event.

Black_Hat......looks like the advance curve was generated in France (avance, Trs/min). Could you link me to the source......I am fluent in French.

Thanks!
