Default It Runs!

Well, just finished a service on my new-to-me 964 Turbo. And it seems to run okay and I didn't have any leftover parts!!

My only recommendation is to definitely buy the Brake Bleeder from Pelican Parts (PEL-0109). That was the only easy part of the 3-day ordeal. Oh yeah, buy lots of paper towels.

Matt- pretty turbo you have there! What did you cover with this service; just curious?

Isn't the brake bleeder a great product! Ease of use is such a plus!

The Motive power bleeder is a nice tool. Wish I had the one with the swivel to, though

Okay, so the game plan was to create a DIY listing...but once I got in there, I realized I needed more help from you guys than I could really offer in return. With that said, I can at least provide my sequence of events:

Services: Oil Change / Transmission Fluid Change / Air Filter / Valve Adjustment / Valve Cover Gaskets / Spark Plugs / Power Steering Fluid Change / Brake Fluid Flush

References:
1. Auftragsnummer 964 (Adrian Streather)
2. Type 964: Technical Data Without Guesswork (Bentley Publishers)
3. 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 (Wayne Dempsey)

Procedure I used:
1. Drive car until oil thermostat opens (temp gauge at 9 o'clock)

2. Break loose lug nuts on all four wheels

3. Jack-up car (101 Projects - Page 17)

4. Drain Oil (Streather – Page 81)
a. There are three drain ports for 964 Turbos
i. Oil Cooler Thermostat – in front of Right Rear Wheel

ii. Engine Crankcase

iii. Turbo Oil Collection Container (official name?)
b. Oil Filter removal: I used the 3-prong oil filter wrench at Sears (Product #02820523000)

c. The oil comes out fast!!! Like Niagara Falls fast!
5. Drain Transmission Fluid (Rennlist 964 DIY by elbeee964 posted on 02MAY09)

6. Remove Intercooler (Streather – Page 467)
a. There were many more hoses/wires than I expected. Ensure you label them as you go!
7. Remove Air Filter Housing
a. It was easiest to remove the A/C compressor first
8. Change Air Filter

9. Remove enough hoses/wires to reach upper valve covers (there’s a lot!)

10. Remove Upper and Lower Valve Covers

11. Remove Spark Plugs

12. Adjust Valves as necessary (Streather – Page 425)
a. It was necessary to remove the A/C Compressor in order to remove the Air Filter Housing, so using a wrench to turn the crank was not possible. So, I gently rotated the fan itself with my fingers (always clockwise!)

b. You should be able to rock the intake and exhaust valves slightly when that cylinder is at TDC.

c. Getting the Feeler Gauge into the gap is tough on the Intake valves. The exhaust valves on the right side were the easiest (Cylinders 4-6)…try those first.
13. Install new spark plugs / spark plug wires / distributor cap / rotor

14. Install new valve cover gaskets and valve covers

15. Change Fuel Filter (Streather – Page 84)

16. Reassemble everything else (the labeling is key!!)

17. Complete Oil Change procedure (Streather – Page 81)

18. Complete Transmission Fluid Change procedure (Rennlist 964 DIY by elbeee964 posted on 02MAY09)
a. I’ve tried the gravity method to refill the transmission on other cars, but I found it much easier to use a cheap pump from Wal-Mart
19. Flush Brake Fluid (Streather – Page 265)
a. There are 2 bleed valves at each corner (inner and outer)…bleed both.
20. Power Steering Fluid Change
a. Use the cheap Wal-Mart pump to remove as much fluid as possible

b. Refill with new fluid

c. Start car and turn steering wheel lock-to-lock a few times

d. Repeat steps A-C until fluid is suitably clean
21. Reinstall wheels (Without Guesswork – Page 44-10)
a. I didn’t know there was a procedure until I was done…not fun to redo after 3 days of work.
22. Drive car and enjoy!

Attachments: Receipts (I’m not affiliated with either, but am very happy with both companies)
1. Pelican Parts
2. Speedlife Motorsports

Things I’d do differently next time:
1. Buy heavier oil. The Motul is a Porsche A40 approved oil, but is only 5W40. I might opt for a 15W40 next time since I live in Florida.
2. Rent a garage space with a lift.
3. Drive it more!
