Cool 965 Turbo Owners UK

How many of us are they based in the UK using this forum.

It would be good to arrange a get together so that we can compare cars etc., or even a track day of some sort towards the summer.

If like me you see your own car stationary but never get to see it on the move as your the one driving it. The 965 Turbo is rare so you dont even get to see others very often full stop.

When i done a track day last Summer I felt fast in my car on the main straights Great going through the gears and driving it just below the redline at 0.7 bar flat out. You just dont get a chance to do drive these cars hard through that gears on the road.

On the road

Foget 1st Gear as as soon as the Turbo comes in at 3000RPM you have reached 7000RPM and need to change gear. 50 ish i think.

80MPH 2nd Gear redline again really quick
approching 130MPH in third. As soon as you tend to do that on the road you are thinking of the next speed trap or hidden cop car ready to spoil your day. So really you dont get to drive these cars hard in 4 or 5th gear day to day.

Really recommend that you all do get you car on a track and see what it can do. Going back to the last one i went on I was s the only 964 Turbo driver around. When not driving but looking at the other drivers of 911s generally they did not seem that fast from the pit wall going by.
(Compared to the Ferrari 550s etc which had real presence.)

I am told by my wife that my car looked really fast from the pit wall and sounded mean as well straight is after a 50MPH max chicaine. so the Turbo gets going in acceleration, but video tape does not really give you the feeling. Not sure if any flames came from the rear either.

Our cars are rare and it is not often i see another one so suggest a get together as the weather is getting better.

If you happened to see 69COU embarasingly broken down on the A232 on Monday evening this was because its his owner ran out of petrol!

The good old petrol light came on after a day of messing aroung back roads. I was somewhere between Ashford & Maidstone and did pull into a garage that dad no Super Unleaded so I thought I would carry on to the next. Well no reall sign of a petrol station as i came down the A20 towards the M25 , hard choice. Decided carry on A20 if it remained clear i should be alright until the Sliproad for Orpington with a Petrol Station 1/2 mile down A232

Made the slip road and knew in my heart i was now running on fumes just hoping no to get the old stalling sensation I once had when i ran out of petrol at the age of about 18.

No!! it starts to splutter a bit I am off the slip road only 1/2 mile needed may even roll it their on fumes. (Then TRAFFIC stationary) make it to Pelican crossing that tatches me on Red. everything dies there and then.

Well push the car to the side of the road off the Zig Zag white lines in embarrasment, you could feel the other drivers enjoying the moment.

I walk feeling i have left 69COU abandoned and go in search of a petrol can and some fuel at the petrol station.

Finally get there and no petrol cans on the shelf. Then i plead with someone to searc the stock room.

Finally assistant finds one to my relief.
Pay for the can leave some money fill the can go back to save my car.

Its like the walk of embarasment pasted 1/2 mile of stationary traffic that has all had to go around my car with hazards flashing. You could feel the joy in their faces looking at me with my petrol can

Then i thought to myself I may have a car with no petrol in it butin 5 minutes this bunch of traffic will still drive their Ford Mondeo's or other sensible cars. I will be back to Porsche.
I walked the last 1/4 mile back with a big Smile/

Moral of this story is dont drive with less that 1/4 of a tank.

What a terrible feeling that must have been !
But you are right, once you fire it up again, you know it was worth the embarrassment.
I live in Holland, so with our new Canal tunnel the trip should be easy. Who knows...
A while ago you mailed me some very interesting stuff regarding the cat and/or muffler bypass.
Also a waste gate-cat bypass was mentioned. Which one do you have installed ? And are you happy about it ?

Regards,

The wastegate still has a small cat in it as i did not beleive this would be slowing the car.
I have the main Catalyst Bypass installed replaces the box that runs under horizontal under bumber.

I ended up puttting the secondary muffler back on the car and I am happy with it.

My next change is likely to be a 1bar spring in the Turbo. I had planed to do it in December but other things got in the way.

I had the car on the Dyno and was getting 330BHP so up by 10BHP due to Cat Bypass. Possible a bit more as very few of these in standard form maintain the factory 320BHP. James done a whole posting on his upgrades and found some small things were costing him power before he started upgrading.

I will try and post My Dyno sheet

Wink

These were the Dyno results from G Force
They estimate 334HP at the flywhell based on 18% loss throught transmission.

This thy put down as 274.5 at the wheeels

69COU,

Sorry to hear about your petrol story, but next time I suggest you put about a fiver worth of 95 RON fuel and then carry on. The possible damage (and the inconvenience) of running out of fuel (thus getting all the crud cumulated in the tank into the filter/engine) is far worse than having to drive 10 or so miles on 95 RON fuel!

Good post by the way.
