That spring again...
Hi,
I want to install a 1 bar waste gate spring to get some more performance from my car
Is the spring the only modification needed, or are other modifications necessary as well?
Are there any differences between a euro and US version (my car is a european one) that we should think of?
Any and all info is welcome!
Thanks,
Oscar

Yes and No. The spring will get you 1 bar boost, but I believe there is a boost limiter that will prevent your car from exceeding 0.7 or 0.8 bar. That means you will need to do a slight wiring mod to override that protection.
You will also need to get a new boost gauge - your stock gauge will not read higher than 0.7

1.1 bar protection may cause you a few problems when car is cold or its cold out.
As you may have seen before I recently got my 1bar spring installed and the car was boosting to 1.1bar on the dyno at 17 degrees C room temp.
THE CAR WAS FINE ON AFTERNOON OF COLLECTION. It was a real hot day.
However i found that the boast was getting cut off at about 4000 Revs as soon as it got colder. Quite a scare the first few times as the protection system cuts off the fuel pump.
(Its a bit like hitting the brakes just as the max torque is driving you forward)
It actually cuts the ground feed to the fuel pump for about 1/2 a second.
Earlier postings with my graphs.
G Force motorsport are going to do the modification on my cut off switch as it only affects some cars so it is always a bit of a trial and error when doing these mods. (They diagnosed it in about 10 seconds as to what was happening)
You go above 1.1bar for about half a second.
(Not by much maybe up to 1.2bar) before the spring brings boost level back to 1bar.
You are however on the cut off limit that was designed with you only having a 0.7 bar spring.
Even with the factory 0.7 bar spring you do get the same sort of effect of slightly higher boost initially that then tails off to approx 0.7bar. Again you can see that on my graphs.

Link above does not work so here it is again.
Red lines show the original Dyno with 0.7 bar spring
Blue show the AFTER Dyno with 1.0 bar spring.

If you want to take full advantage of the increased boost, I would add an HKS boost controller. You can specify the overboost setting, and adjust the amount of boost with a high and low setting, which is perfect if you run the car at the track. The units help the spool time and are very easy to use once set up is completed. I would alos look at the BOV on your car and if it has over 50k on it, replace it with a TIAL at the same time. Make sure the car does not lean out with the added boost to be safe.
