On my C2 Turbo, detonation sounds like a very quick popcorn popping or almost like a rapid fizzling/crackling noise.

If you hear detonation, get off the throttle immediately. Apparently, these motors can take quite a bit of it, but you can do quite a bit of damage if you stay in the throttle.

Get an air/fuel mixture gauge at the very least before tinkering with the boost. An EGT or wideband O2 is even better. One of the newer Civics has a wideband from the factory. The part sells for about C$300 or US$200.

Les

I am about as technical as the inside of a 'ping'-pong ball.....

How would I know if/when I get 'detonated'

What should I do about it if it ever happens?

Reason I ask is that my '91 C2 Turbo has a very throaty exhaust note, which I can't remember it having before. However, I have had a problem with the boost hose, which apparently was not working properly when I bought the car 3 months ago... This is now fixed and the car is awesomely quick.

Could it be that the 'throaty'-ness is normal, and wasn't happening because the boost hose was faulty? Now that it's fixed the correct exhaust note is back....

There was a distinct backfire when I revved the car before, which is how I knew the boost hose was faulty, the backfire is gone, but a low, phlegmy-throaty sound is now present... it sounds great, but I may be damaging something??

Thanks in advance!

Kevin,

Please take a look at the explanation from Steve on the same post but on different board.

Hi Sonny

Had a look, thanks. Don't think I've been detonated yet.... but still don't know whether my car is 'normal' now or not.... (see above explanation).

Anyhow, how's your Zermatt Silver C2 Turbo going? Any new mods since last I looked?

Cheers.... <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
