Post Need Advice on Turbo Purchase

I have a disease. It struck me out of nowhere. I cannot explain it. I MUST OWN A 911 TURBO. I have no idea why but something is screaming inside me and won't stop until I've got one.

I've narrowed down my choices to either the '89, '91 or'94 turbo. In the early nineties I drove an '87 turbo. It was the most goddamn
exhilirating experience of my life! The way that car exploded in a fury of acceleration is etched in my mind and in my heart forever.

The only negative of the car was that I felt "beat up" after driving it. Several people have told me that the '91 & '94 turbo offer more
comfort without sacrificing that addreniline pumping 930 acceleration experience. Is this true?

The sympthoms you describe feels very familiar indeed, based on my own experience I can say that it won't get any better after buying a 911 turbo, it's going to get way worse.

I have a -91 964 turbo but no experience with the 930, so I can't help you with the comparision. But the single turbo type of acceleration is there for sure. You floor the pedal, hear the turbo spooling and next thing your in heaven.

To put it simply, I couldn't be happier with the car. My 2 cents, if you are willing to spend the money, go for a 964. But most important, do that PPI.

T-
My Dad just bought a 1994 3.6 turbo after selling his 87 930. I can tell you after driving both cars, that the 94T is much smoother. The car accelerates wonderfully (very fast in third) and the ride and suspension seems to be much better than the 87. This car handles great, much more like my c4s. The car is so smooth, I really can't believe the difference. My Dad's 87 did have some modifications, but it did not handle nearly as well as this one. Probably with all the mods, the car was as fast as the 94 (stock- for the time being). Perhaps it is right to say that you seem to notice the acceleration more in the 930, but I think that because the 94 is deceiving in its ability to accelerate. The comfort factor in the 94 makes it a real pleasure to drive. As I drive it more, I would be happy to share more with you. The 94 is different than past turbos, they say the "pinnacle" of single turbo Porsche cars. With its 3.6 engine, big reds (in the front), improved CIS it is no wonder why so many owners are quite happy. This is not to say that the 3.3 are bad, I loved that 87, but I think the improvements in the 1994 make it a great car to drive and own.

Just my $.02. Hope it helps.

Good luck.

Hi all,

I just want to add a few more points. The 964 Turbos available from '91 to '92 (3.3L) and in '94 (3.6L) USA. The main differences from an '87 930 would be in the body style, bigger intercooler, better turbo (k27), better suspension (springs instead of torsion bars), and of course the interior. The Ventilation system was also a great improvement over the older 911s.

Don't count out '92 model year. It is the last of the 3.3L single Turbo. If you have the mean, buy the '94 Turbo for sure. These cars are very rare. Or if you are the modify kind, and have some what limited budget, get the '91-92 and modify it. It will be as fast as a modified '94 or very comparable.

One more thing, the newer the Turbo the turbo lag seems to be a little less each time. When I say newer, I mean newer model year. Porsche improves on it very year.

I personally like a little lag and then a lot of uummmm when the boost kicks in, like my '92 C2 Turbo.

Good luck with you choices,

Sonny

Hello

I remember hearing that the way to buy Porsches is to get the youngest car your budget can afford. I would submit that this is very sound logic, and should be applied to buying your turbo.

I have a '91 C2 Turbo, and all I can say is that if you think you have a bug now, wait 'til you own one.

Your posts have helped me make up my mind. I'm going with the '87 Turbo.

I realized that the illusion of speed, the sensory stimulation was more important than wether the 964's are faster or more comfortable than a 930. Clearly they are. But the emotional excitement I got from the roar of those engines as I was hammered back into my seat after that Turbo spooled up is what this is all about for me. I have realized from the responses to my posts that the "beat up" feeling is part of the whole experience of driving one of these Untamed Teutonic Beasts.

You know what, I wouldn't have it any other way!

Yep, sounds like he has!

I almost never have my stereo switched on... and my electric window switches are going to wear out through me opening the windows constantly to hear the exhaust note... especially at 3000 rpm.. and of course the crackling and popping..

Here are some figures to get you salivating about your intended purchase.

The Turbo 3.6 figures are derived from the curve in the owners manual, and the others come from a comparison carried out in an Australian motoring mag earlier this year.

Acceleration Turbo 911 BMW WRX
3.6 Carerra M3 STI

0-60 km/hr 2.48 2.4 2.8 2.6
0-80 km/hr 3.91 3.9 4.2 4.1
0-100 km/hr 5.09 5.3 5.7 6.1
0-120 km/hr 6.43 7.3 7.8 8.3
0-140 km/hr 8.57 9.6 10.2 11.6
0-400m 13.5 13.5 13.9 14.2

80-140 km/hr 4.66 5.70 6.00 7.50

In my opinion the figures confirm what my buttometer told me in April, not much can touch a turbo when it is in its sweet spot.

Luckily for me 100 km/hr is New Zealand's open road speed limit so there's plenty of prey to overtake at a speed where the car shines.
