Post Chirping / squeaking from wheels

Hi all.

When I've been driving my Turbo 3.6 for a while around town, the wheels start making a sort of "chirping" or "squeaking" noise each time they go round. I think it's the left hand front wheel - but it might be more than one. The sound gets worse whenever the steering wheel is turned slightly to the left. I think it seems to stop when I brake - but then again I've also noticed that the brakes squeal a lot under the same conditions, but I'm assuming this is due to brake pad glazing with town use (which I used to get on the 928GTS).

What is likely to be the cause of the squeaking? Is it normal? Could it be the brake pads grabbing for some reason? Might it indicate warped discs, worn bearings or anything nasty?

Greg:

I'm afraid this is one of those situations where you need to do some investigating (part of the fun of learning details of your car firsthand). Best place to start is by jacking up the front of the car so the front wheels can spin freely.

This should help you identify the source. The sound you hear could be any of the items you listed. Once you spin the wheel, you can take it off and do a further inspection of the rotor, pads, and bearing.

See if you can narrow it down, then post your results. Since this is a new car for you, I strongly recommend doing an inspection at all 4 wheels. Furthermore, consider an alignment/cornerbalance and wheel balancing just to make sure everything is set correctly. That will cost you about $250 total.

Also - any pictures of this car?

greg

it sounds to me like the problem you are having is also the same problem as the other post you made about hight speed instability.

i would definately go for a full geometry check, and also get the tyres/wheels checked out (ie. check balance and that tyres are all exactly round).

yes, the 964 does get a bit light up front at speed, but certainly not undriveably so. Ive been upto speeds of 160mph in mine, and the steering wheel could be managed with a single finger.

Will, JBH - thanks for the feedback.

I have a couple of fairly low-quality images of the car. If I can work out how to insert them into a post I'll do so. Unless someone can tell me quickly??

OK, it looks like I'll have to publish them somewhere and then point to them. I'll work on that.

BTW Will - Camtune were supposed to have done a full-blown laser wheel alignment before I took delivery of the car. I will double-check with them to make sure that they did..

nice car Greg

imho, if I were you, knowing what I know now (after 3yrs of ownership) about london area Porsche specialists, I would take the car straight to JZ Machtech (www.jzmachtech.com) (off J20 of M25). I live in Kent (nr Bromley), but I find JZ are absolutely spot on, and so worth the journey. Many of their customers come from much further away than me, and that speaks volumes. They also have a great labour rate (£34ph).

I guarantee they will resolve any issues you may have.

Greg:

While the laser technology may give the correct camber, caster and toe it does nothing for the ride height and weight balance. You really need to have the car set up so that there is the proper weight distribution front/rear and left/right. This can only be done using scales under the 4 wheels. It is a fairly straight forward process for someone who knows what they are doing - exasperating for those that don't.

Unfortunately, rebalancing the car will require realigning the wheels, but once it's done you know the car is right - it's worth the money.

Nice car! I like the yellow

How on earth does one adjust the weight distribution??

Not that I am capable of trying, just curious...

Dear Greg,
Drop me an email and I can send you a couple of diagrams which help explain this. As you adjust ride height the weight or load distribution on each wheel changes. I have 2 Porsche diagrams which can explain this easily,
Ciao,
Adrian

In the gap between the brake pads on both pads there is ceramic like chip the size of pencil eraser. Its the brake sensor. When the brakes wear doun they start to rub on the sensor. The sensor (brake) warning light wont go on untill the chip has worn itself all the way to the wire inside etc... We all have rotors that are not exactly even ~ and the rotor touches the chip and it sqeeks every rotation. Replace pads or make sure sensor is in its place correctly. When the rotor heats up it seems to sqeek more and depending on the effected pad when you turn one way or the other it also sqeeks more. Its a sqeek that will drive you crazy if your windows are doun ~ especialy when your going slow. Give it a try. All you have to do is take the wheel off and look in the pad gap on the inside part of brake pad to see the sensor and its position. If thats the case you will see a misplaced sensor or one that is getting eaten by the rotor. Good luck!
