Post 1992 C2 Turbo S vs 1993 Turbo 3.6

Anyone has any personal experience driving the 1992 3.3 Turbo S compared with the Turbo 3.6? I have heard that the Turbo S, although having 381 hp compared to 360 hp of the 3.6, is a bitch to drive and is very sluggish at street-driving revs. Can anyone attest to that?

Firstly, the earlier turbo versions of the 964 type sported 3.3 litre engines. Later versions had the 3.6 litre engines. BOTH versions had an S model. You have written about a turbo S version with 381 hp. The only 964 turbo S version that sports close to that power is the 3.6 turbo S, NOT the 3.3 turbo S. The earlier S version had some lag due to the inherent limitations (engine size etc.). Not that the later 3.6 version did not but it was smoother both in S and regular format. However, this earlier 3.3 turbo S was obviously faster in all respects than the regular 3.3 turbo car.

Thus I think that what you have heard may be right in some ways BUT the S version that you are talking is supposed to have less power (or is atleast not as smooth at power delivery) than the LATER 3.6 turbo version. Hope this helps.

Hi Simon,

Can't help with your question, but I'd be interested to know a bit more about your RHD Turbo 3.6.

As you probably know, there were only 63 RHD Turbo 3.6s made; 46 in 1993 and 17 in 1994.

Out of interest, I've been noting down the details of the various RHD cars I see in magazines and putting together an amateur database.

Mine is ex-Singapore, and was originally Horizon Blue Metallic. It has subsequently been repainted to Polar Silver.

Downunder, there were 15 Turbo 3.6s sold in Australia, and two in New Zealand [midnight blue] that I know of. Obviously, there's yours in Malaysia. Do you have any more info on other Turbo 3.6s in Singapore or Malaysia?

The 3.3 turbo S HAD 381 hp! This car was more of a turbo RS and only 80 was made in 1992.

Hi John

Mine is ex-UK and is Mint Green (a rare colour, I've been told), completely stock original with factory sports exhaust. Best Porsche I've ever driven - I really love the car. Wish I can afford to keep it AND get that 3.3 Turbo S I've been coveting! I personally know of 3 other RHD Turbo 3.6 in Malaysia, 2 of which are also ex-UK. I do not know where the last is from - possibly imported new directly from factory as it belongs to a royalty!

If you want more info, please feel free to ask specifically.

Patrik,

Interesting. Thanks for pointing the fact. The site may well be absolutely accurate and if my assumption that there was only one 964 turbo S with power in the 381 hp range was wrong, then I am sorry. Bear in mind that even the later 3.6 turbo S sported about 385 hp with a bit less lag due partly to engine size and more drivability on street of course but you are right in that it seems from this website that both have close hp numbers.

However, I have seen lots of confusion between the 3.3 turbo S and the 3.6 turbo S. In fact there are several internet pics that I know for sure as showing a car with erroneous caption especially with these 964 turbo S cars.

I would expect the T2 3.3 S to be easier to drive than the standard 3.3. Most of the engine mods will be turbo and flow mods. These should bring boost on sooner and smoother.

I agree that the standard 3.3 can be sluggish off the line but personally I find the lag good fun in all but first.

Ran , Patrick is absolutely right!
They were 80 lightweight 964 Turbo S with the 3.3 liter and the big reds etc. I do not think that she was imported in the US so that is why you may not know it.

Besides the link to a site I provide for your info, Two months ago the French RS magazine had an multi page article about this car. Needless to say I was drouling all over the pages
What a beauty!

Anyway here is the link:
