Gordon,

Check out Robin's site, it has a wealth of information. http://p-car.com/vin.html

WP0 are standard on all cars, AC I believe is US or Canadian, ROW cars have ZZZ instead, 96 is the car model (964), R is 1993, the last six digits are the serial number.

Thanks, Jean. As a new owner, I'm afraid I have a lot of questions. I found answers in "Original 911", but they have the digits wrong and another set of answers in the Bentley Technical Data book and they are wrong as well, though I think I've found the answer between several sources.

Jean, another question if you're still up... The fellow who owned it replaced the differential with a Quaife. I was wondering if that elimninates the 20% lockup on accelration and 100% on deceleration?

Gordon,

I am not familiar with Quaife LSDs, and far from being a subject matter expert..so please don't take my comments at face value, what I know is that Quaife are torque sensing LSDs and as such they can do a great job in acceleration by shifting power (torque) to the wheel with most grip therefore reducing wheelspin up to 50% lockup I think. Under deceleration this can become a problem, or I would say "tricky" as both wheels would not be locked up together, therefore might reduce stability in a fast corner, the normal 964 diff could actually behave better. I don't think for street use you will notice any difference however..

Dear Jean,
A = Coupe (US version)
C = 3.6 Turbocharged engine (US version)
R = Model year 1994
The 12th digit is part of the auto type number in this case "4".
The last five digits are the serial number.
Ciao,
Adrian

Thank you for correcting me Adrian. Any idea what would "ZZZ" be then?
Cheers
Jean

Dear Jean,
Due to the fact that only the USA requires certain identification in the VIN and the rest of the world doesn´t Porsche uses ZZZ for the rest of the world. This is simply a cost saving measure. The last Z means that it cannot be sold in the USA. You may find countries which specify US basic version but then some additional mods that are not approved in the US or the deletion of some mods. Then you would see ABZ. You may also see a Z after the 96 which also means not for sale in the USA.
It gets complicated.
My book will be released for sale according to the schedule on 01.12.03.
Ciao,
Adrian
