What is activated when key is switched on? Unusual Noise
When I turn the key to the on (first)position without turning to starting position, I hear a number of things start running. I assume the fuel pump is one - are there others (besides radio, etc.)?
I hear a surging sound that seems a bit loud and intermittant coming from the right rear side - I've not heard it on my normally aspirated 911s. Anyone know what that might be?

Everything is fine.
Up front you will hear the ABS pump (loud). It will run for a bit then stop. Out back you hear the 2nd fuel pump. It can seem to run all the time with varying frequency.
There are lots of other fans etc. on these cars that turn on with the key as well.

Depending upon the temp of the engine the additional blowers (two on a Turbo) may also crank up. They are noisy and operate intermittantly.
The Normal 964s only have one blower but it does the same,

Forgot to mention. If you hear a gurling type sound from the right rear, this is the ABS system getting pressurised and the valves positioning themselves etc. This can also be disconcerting at first. Basically you worry when you do not hear all these wierd sounds when you turn the ignition key to the on position. Remember also that over time things wear and tend to make a little more noise. Quiet in the on/run and start positions is the last thing you want to hear,

Thanks guys - I appreciate the reassurance. It is amazing how attuned your ear can be to even the slightest noise when you have just bought a car.
Adrian: I have to laugh at your statement, but it is absolutely right - Hearing something is always better than hearing nothing.
Can you tell the locations of the rear fuel pump and the ABS pump?

The ABS pump nosie is right in front of your face. You cannot miss it. To learn what it sounds like. Turn the engine off but leave the ignition in run. Pump the brake pedal three or four times. It will crank up.
Fuel pump you can hear actually behind you.
Once you get the hang of it you become very noise direction sensitive and learn what is in this area.
