Excellent point the whole IMS issue is something that will always be on the back of your mind too.

Soon after I traded mine in the IMS failed. Remember, the m96 was designed to be as cheap as possible in the lowly late 90s when porsche very nearly went bankrupt. I would take any m64 derrived engine with any miles over one of these off warranty.
FYI ck out the thread in the 996 section about the blown IMD just. today.....

+1 on the TT. That 964-derived Mezger engine has proven to be a tank over the years... Granted, those that TRACK the engine extensively (GT3 and some TTs) are having blown coolant line issues of late... Fix is to weld on the coolant lines (drop the engine) or pin them in place (some interesting DIY on Rennlist)... But for a DD, I think the 6TT is a great choice.
I am not a fan of the M96 engine. But with that said, for DD use it might be just fine...
Good luck with your search though, and pick the car that YOU want!

There is a consistment message coming through about the M96 engine. I have a good choice of TTs at reasonable prices. Time to narrow down my choice. Any feedback on Tiptronic vs. Manual?

I think the Tip vs. manual argument will really come down to your needs.... Will you be driving in traffic? Are the lots of hills with frequent stops? If so, a Tip will serve nicely...
Stateside - manuals seem to sell for a premium relative to manuals. I have heard this is not the case in Asia.
My $0.02,

As a DD it will spend time in traffic, although not what I would call crawling traffic. More choice in NZ with Tiptronic but was a bit worried it might take the edge off the performance. With 420 hp I gather the performance losses aren't that noticeable.

I drive my 06 Cayman S every day. Its so much fun, forgiving, comfortable, yet sporty that I forget about the 930 in the garage most days. Its such a driver's car and handles so well. Other than a CEL from my aftermarket exhaust, been Honda reliable.
I had to tweak my Cayman to get it looking how I wanted to however. Im not a huge fan of how they look outta the box.

Now if you were driving in bumper to bumper traffic like Los Angeles, NYC etc then maybe a tip.

Update: I now have two turbos. A 2001 996 Turbo tiptronic has joined the 1993 Turbo 3.6. It has high miles (93,000) but feels so tight. Apart from the aesthetics it's hard to believe the 996 is valued at 38% of the Turbo 3.6. Pictures to follow, when I find a sympathetic angle.
