Hi Jim

The ex owner here!

Glad you are enjoying the car.

When I bought the car, the steering wheel was a Porsche aftermarket three spoke affair. The OEM wheel is a large air bag wheel, and to my mind very ugly indeed. The Porsche aftermarket wheel had a rim that was far too thick for my liking, hence I switched for the ergonomically excellent four spoke wheel currently on the car, which, whilst not original, is period (i.e. other Porsches were using that wheel in 1993). I'd recommend getting used to this wheel first - for me at least it is the best steering wheel Porsche have ever designed for feel and use.

As for increasing power, you may have noticed from the paperwork with the car that I had a 1 bar boost spring (fitted by one of the previous owners) removed from the car and replaced with an OEM 0.7 bar spring. To be honest, I could not detect any real reduction in performance, and the engine was much smoother coming off boost. With the 1 bar spring it was horribly sudden. So I'd think carefully before going for more power - personally I don't think the car needs it!

Enjoy!

Cheers

Thanks for all the great comments! I've had more positive feedback and admiring glances in last few drives than couple of years driving the Cayman. It seems a much cooler car than the modern Porsches that I was considering.

Cheers Steve for the info about the car. I do like the current steering wheel and the owners handbook doesn't have great pictures of the OEM one so thought it was very similar. The performance is fantastic too, it's a real buzz when the turbo comes on over few thousand revs so I'm sure will be happy with it for a long time. I have changed the exhaust tips to oval ones which are bit more subtle than the big pipes! Noticed that the exhaust is non-standard - I guess the headers are still stock.

Had fun at Silverstone on the low friction circuit - it was raining too!

As stefan said, since our cars do not have a sophisticated engine management system, goods results with increased boost have a lot to do with air temperature, fuel quality, etc... For example, just this past week-end I went out with a group and I usually run at 14.5-15.0 psi. Half way into the run I turned down the boost to 12.5 psi (The day and air was very hot) and the car was running much smoother and probably as quick if not quicker. This is with a K27 HFS.

Need to get used to it now and have some time at Silverstone next week to try Porsche's low friction circuits which should be safe place to get the back end out and entertaining to see how it compares on the kick plate compared to the Cayman. Thanks for the info about the headers etc.
It's going to be an absolute night and day drive comparison with the Cayman. The 987 seriously feels like it was built to make everyone look like a great driver, where these air-cooled cars will take time to learn, yet be so much more rewarding in the end.

That's a beauty you got there, I can see why you would get tons of compliments and looks! Again it's on a whole new level vs 987.
