Ahh, a necropost.
All the widebody/turbo specific parts have a 965 prefix part number so it makes a convenient shorthand for "964 Turbo".
I'd bet that it was called that inside the company too.

Here are are 4 -911 C2 turbo's I built in the 1990's . I bet anyone of you can tell me the true 965. The one built with 965 unibody parts from the factory. But none of us will call that 3.6 turbo a 965 because it was the first year for a 3.6 turbo. Just like in 1991 was the first year for a 965 C2 turbo. Owners of the first 965's called it that in the 90's and still do today. Those youtube kids today call a 965 a V8 911 cause they can only understand youtube videos.
