Default Were these a factory option?

I have never been a fan of the silver gauge faces and carbon/aluminum gear/brake lever my car came with when I bought it. I was told by a local wrench that my gauge faces were a factory option. He said you can tell because you can not see the warning lights unless they are illuminated..that the factory was the only ones that "got it right" So, to my questions..can anyone confirm from my cruddy cell pix if these are a factory option? If so, I found on another thread that the factory simply put the colored face over the standard black face, so in theory I could just remove them to return them to black?? Same goes with the gear/brake lever, I've seen these on plenty of 993's, they look nice enough..I would just prefer the plain black leather ones....are mine a factory option or aftermarket?

Thanks for any info..

No, I believe they were made for the 993. I might be wrong but as far as I know the 993 options list included more things, these for instance.

Nevertheless, you could probably order these through Porsche Exclusive back in 91 anyway.

Ok,
I'll keep that in mind. They are not currently for sale as I have nothing to replace them with. If they are genuine Porsche parts, they will be going on a shelf. I keep all the original parts for my car..if they are not, they will be sold at some point.

No not true, factory used colored guages that one could see the lights ( as was used on the 993 Turbo S also on the 964 Turbo S if optioned )

Those my friend seem like aftermarket items or dealer applied.

By the way I have a factory ebrake and ****er/boot( in excellent condition ) from my previous 94 3.6 turbo that I am not using. PM,email or call me if interested.

You can see the lights, when they illuminate...what I meant is if they are off, all you can see is a faint outline of what will light up..I have seen others that have dark colored wedges where all of the lights are, I will post a better picture..Pm enroute in ref the shift boot and e-brake..

Hopefully these photos will explain what I was trying to say better..

Here is the clock, I really tried to get a photo that would show what you can see when the lights are not illuminated..you can see the battery right off the tip of the minute hand between the 11 and 12 in this one...I don't now what that distortion is just below the 11 in the photo, it's not on the gauge.

The factory gauge faces were silk-screened on both sides of the plastic with two separate masks as opposed to aftermarket (including even Techart I believe) that only do a single side or they (arftermarket) possibly use the same mask for both sides? Kinda the equivalent of a half-silvered mirror. Basically on the backside of a factory gauge, where the light can shine through there is no silk screening.

964.641.303.00.2QY - rpm
964.641.546.00.2QY - Speedometer
964.641.104.00.2QY
964.641.203.00.2QY
964.641.702.00.2QY - Clock

Not 100% certain but these might be the part numbers?

Jason,
Thank you for the info. Do you know if these were just placed over the black faces? I have heard that as well and all I need to do is remove these. I think I'm just going to send them off to NHS...let them deal with it..I think they can replace the the plastic lenses with glass too...

My understanding is that they did not offer color faced gauges until the 993 line but I could be wrong and i don't believe these are factory. You could get gauges in different colors of leather bezels. I have a complete factory set out of a 94 turbo with black leather bezels for sale if anyone is interested.

The Carbon Fiber was introduced by the exclusive department in 1994 and as standard equipment on the 993 turbo S. The CF was not a factory option in 1994 it was released by the exclusive department and sold as an add on by the dealerships in the US. My car had them installed by the dealership in 1994 costing nearly $5000.00 + $750 to install. The e-brake shifter did not come with the metal Porsche part back then I believe this was introduced in 1996.

If you want i can check the option codes of your car and see what it says. PM me your vin number and I will send you back the option codes.
