Have been looking at getting some Big Reds for my 3.3 turbo and heard of some 996 turbo brakes available.
Has anyone fitted these or know if they are a straight fit.
I dont really have any need for the bigger brakes, other than it would be a nice mod to have. My blacks are looking a little tied so maybe i`ll just have to get them cleaned up and painted.

Yeah I think you`re right James. I mention to RC the idea about bigger brakes and he's too dam efficient and now has a couple of options for me.
RC fitted some pagid pads earlier this year which seem good despite the squealing at slow speeds.

Switching to 996 calipers will involve many more parts than a big red installation will.
I went to big reds on my car. It's a bolt-on job as one would expect. Total cost was $1300. Sunset Porsche is a good source for the parts required.

If you want the "look," bigger brakes make sense. However, on street tires and at anything less than extreme track duty on slicks, there's no performance advantage at all.

As for myself, I'm slowly moving my car to a Turbo S spec. Big reds are part of the package.

Think i`m just going to get my blacks painted. I guess visually there is not much in it between the 3.3 turbo calipers and the 3.6 big reds.
Have speedlines and other bits and pieces to throw money at anyway.

With bigger calipers and rotors, you get more consistent brake force distribution at the edge of lockup (basically because it's easier to modulate stiffer brake components).
however, you can't add more friction to the braking "system" than the tires are able to apply to the road.

Derrick, I agree with your points. Bigger brakes are needed on the track for their thermal capacity. On the street they can be nothing more than a fashion statement.
The more modern Turbos need them because they are 200 - 300 lb. up on our cars.

Paul - did that $1300 include the calipers?
Who did you source the adapters from?
Thanks,
John

I bought the calipers (from a 928 GTS; same as on the Turbo 3.6) with pads off of Ebay. Got the rotors new off the Pelicanparts classifieds and new rubber brake lines from Pelicanparts.
No adapters are required. The big caliper is a direct bolt-on.
Sunset Porsche can set you up with good prices for new stuff.

I believe it's more sensible to get another main brake cilinder first. If you don't change that first there will only be a minor improvement no matter what brakekit you put on.
