Strange noise - rubbing/mild scraping right side?

Have done a bunch of searching and reading without finding anything that sounds like what I'm hearing so need to ask advice..
The noise is coming from the center/right side of the engine bay and sounds like a mild scraping or rubbing sound. Not particularly pleasant, but also does not sound terrifying.
It isnt rev dependent (revs make no difference) and the sound comes and goes but seems a little less frequent when the car is warm. Its most obvios when the car is at idle, but that might simply be that it isnt being drowned out by the engine when driving.
Absolutely no other symptoms other than the noise itself that I have found (performance/acceleration is fine, car isnt over heating, power steering is fine)
Any ideas? Any risk of driving between now and getting it properly diagnosed?
Thanks
Matt

It happens randomly. At idle when the car is started (so not wheel/tire related), also able to hear when stopped at traffic lights/etc.
Sounds like perhaps a belt is rubbing on something.

check your ac belt roller tensioner, or the fan belt tension sensor to see if the bearings have gone bad in those 2. I just talked to a guy whos fan belt tension sensor wheel broke off and it got lodged in the fan and broke his entire ac braket off. Also i had the AC belt roller tensioner go bad, but now that i think about it the sound would change with engine rpm's. Maybe check and see that the fan isnt rubbing on the housing as well.
