Default 964 Turbo mystery

Well, I thought it was a bad joke at first, or maybe an updated car. I found this car for sale: http://www.bilbasen.dk/brugt-bil/for...D812100922.htm

And it states the MY as 1988. Because the seller describes the car as a "100 % original 965 Turbo" I decided to contact him as it it couldn't be true. Perhaps a typo I thought. He mailed me back and told me it was an exhibition model and that he had all the documents.

Well, I have never head about an exhibition model before - can anyone confirm or deny this ?

I'd take a lot of convincing. The rear spoiler looks like a 930 one.

Even if the car were some kind of pre-production model from Porsche, I would be leery of buying a car from anyone with such bad taste in wheels

As we all know Porsche declared there would be no more turbos after 89, and didn't produce the 964t until 90, why would they produce a 964t in 88? When the actual 965 was on the drawing board and had been scrapped, sounds like BS to me! It looks like it has the full 964t interior including all the guages, i wonder what code it has on the gearbox, if it's a G50/52 with an 88 build date than i'll be amazed

I don't think it would make a difference. The car uses 930 brakes and they weren't even thinking about building a 964 turbo in 1988. This must be a 930 with 964 turbo body kit.

Why would such a rare car have 170K kl on it? If it was real, I would think someone would have put this away years ago.

Wouldn't Porsche be able to give you all the specs if you have the VIN #? My knowledge about these cars are not big enough for me to say anything about the authenticity of this particular model, but I am pretty confident that the car is registered by the danish automotive register (CRM) as a 1987. You can search a database for alle recently registered cars and see what the registrations fee was valued at when the car was imported.

As you can see in the attached file, the car (I'm pretty certain this is the exact car we are talking about) is registered as a 3,3 (300 bhp) from 8/10-1987 and 171.000 km on the odometer. I find it very unlikely that the car is anything but a 1987 model, but whether it's a 964 or a 930 I don't know!

He claim the car to be number 78 in the production line according to the VIN.

the biggest issue here is the tub. Porsche did not complete designing the 964 tub in 1987. In order for it to be a 964 it would require the tub to be the same design as the 964. It is 85% different from the earlier 911/930 tubs. There might have been a design study built on a 930 but odds are it would have cost too much to do so.

Interesting... I'm getting really curious as to figure out what this car really is...

If it is a 930 in 964 clothes I must say they have done a pretty good job of rebuilding the car ;-)

I just replied to his mail requesting some documentation of the car's authenticity.

Another interesting question. Why does it have a 993 third brake light vs the standard 964 and why would you modify such a rare car?
