Default Have you re-build your 964 turbo engine?

There was a discussion in another thread about milage and when to re-build.
Would be interesting to know when owners re-build there 964 turbo engines.

I have no definition of a re-build, but for the purpose of this poll, lets say removing the top and changing/fixing something is enough to call it a "re-build".

My current milage is about 69K miles.
The last 4-5 years I tracked the car a lot.
My leak-down numbers are good but engine consumes a lot of oil.
A suspect my valve guides are worn, my plan is to (at least) do a top-end re-build next winter.

I have a 1994 RSA with 300,000 plus miles on it and the motor has never been out of the car still runs very strong.

Wow inyourface thats pretty good. I have 139900 on mine, it runs great but it makes me uneasy because im scared that one day it will just die on me. But at the same time it would be very exciting for me to rebuild the engine myself and i am looking forward to doing that one day.

How much oil are you talking about? Tracking a car ill bur a lot more oil than just street driving. I find with my C2 I can drive 2k miles without topping off the oil when tracking it i need to top off at about 7-1400 miles.

So is this David? I thought you had a modified turbo? You are listed as a sponsor but does not show up under the listing of sponsors.

Anthony, about 0.5 - 1 litre every second full tank of gas during normal driving (not track).
A couple of years ago I did a long drive (1K mile) together with another 964 turbo owner and my engine consumed a lot more oil than his.

I looked at the valve guides on a friends 964 turbo with less miles on the track and they where pretty worn on the exhaust sides. Not really worried about a failure, but it's time to take care of it I think.

Definitely time to look into it. The valve guides are a weak spot on all these engines especially since they moved up in displacement. Heat is the enemy. Although for all of your track miles and mileage I don't think you are doing too badly.

Let us know how it turns out.

90 odd thousand on the car when i rebuilt, the rings were well beyond the wear limits listed in the manuals, now doesn't burn a drop .
