Default 3.3T vs. Mitsubishi Evo FQ340...

I have recently spent a lot of money getting a top end rebuild and adding B&B headers, Tial and K27HFS to my '92 3.3. Over the last month since I got it back I have been running it in. Even when I collected it, I noticed it had far more low end torque (the headers I would think) but obviously I have been taking it easy for the first few hundred miles, so I couldn't really comment on the difference higher up the rev. range.

Well I got a chance last week as I came up behind a Mitsubishi Evo at about 60mph. Without wishing to encourage any stupid behaviour, suffice to say we travelled pretty fast along a lightly trafficked straight wide road and I was able to overtake him.

At the time I didn't know what model of Evo it was, but after looking up his registration number, I found out it was an Evo 8 MR FQ340. These cars weigh 1400kg, have just over 340bhp (240bhp/tonne) and as per the FQ, they are f**king quick - 0-60 in 4.2 secs, 0-100 in 10.6 and 157mph.

Personally I was very pleased by my car - it just kept on pulling, which I would assume to be the effect of the HFS.

As a former Evo owner (Evo VI RS2, 1280kg, 333hp) I know these cars are f*cking fast, especially from 0-60mph the Rallye 4WD kicks in brutally.
How far did you pull him away and up to what speed did you accelerate?
The FQ340 are nice toys, I saw a grey one in London recently.
Your car must be very quick to eat one of those, congrats!

Cheers Clint - although I wouldn't say I am exactly happy with the expenditure

Re. headers - you do, so go buy some!

They are very fast cars and I would doubt I'd be able to keep up with one from 0-60mph where the 4wd would make all the difference. I came up behind him at about 60mph and he accelerated very hard (there were puffs of smoke from his car on each gear change!) to well over three figures and I was able to easily keep up with him and then overtake him. I was probably a couple of car lengths in front of him after about 3/4 mile, when I slowed down for traffic.

Ultimately there wasn't that much in it and it is hardly a scientific test but I was pleased - an FQ340 has around 240bhp/tonne (340/1.4) and the standard 3.3T has around 220bhp/tonne, although the 3.3T is still 10 miles per hour faster at the top end (157mph vs. 167mph). I would hope mine to have around 370bhp, which would give it 250bhp/tonne, probably explaining its advantage vs. the Evo, especially over 100 mph, where I would expect the HFS to make a difference.

more power to you, as if we needed any encouragement to move on to more mods. OK ordering headers shortly so now I need to look at HFS turbos.

Great to hear your car is running loke a train, must be pleasing after all the work you've had done.

Cheers
Steve

Cheers Steve - Headers and HFS rock, so go for it!

Strictly speaking the HFS, Tial and B&Bs weren't actually "mods" at all for me as the turbo, wastegate and headers were all knackered on my car so they are all actually cheaper aftermarket replacement parts (my local OPC quoted me £2.7k just for the headers, cross over and j-pipes!).

Obviously thanks to Rennlist (and 911 addict!) I knew exactly what to buy and from where, to not only save money, but also improve the performance of my car!

Cheers,

Tim.

Now that I have headers, decat and WG I think of going with a K27HFS too.
Unfortunately the onlinestore of Imagineauto seems to be down.
Does anybody know the price for the HFS?
Headers are not in yet so why not do it all together...
I am sure the car will feel very different afterwards

Joe,

I'll try and post later but you can go direct to the man who supplies imagineauto, might save a few euros on that. Unless someone else can chip in in the short term for the site address?

Jon, you know this set up is quite nippy, as you have been on track with me

The engine is in and finished, everything done except the front oil cooler and the exhaust which should be finished by next week. The tail fitted with some butchering so it will still look stock with the exception of the exhaust. I'm in two minds as what to do with the exhaust, at the moment it's almost straight out as the cats are gutted, i'm hoping to cut the cats out and fit some type of cherry bomb silencer or something, it's unclear at the moment, I just want it quiet enough to track. By the end of the month it should be tuned and back on the road, can't bloody wait
