dump question on cam towers

dump question on cam towers
Ok I have a ticking noise from the left side around I think #3. I look up at the cam tower and see a hole with threads. So I grap a bolt and screw it in. I start up the car and the ticking has almost went away. My question is were does the hole go and why would I have a leak coming from a cam tower.

Ok started the car cold and the same noise pre the plug is still there. I guess the headers were still warm when I placed the screw so the noise/leak was low. Time to change the gaskets..
