Default Reading oil level on stick

Ok, I know this a basic no brainer question, but yet I still can't figure it out. How do you read the oil level with the stick. I know the engine needs to be running, but there are no H or L markings. Is it the two triangular cuts about 3 to 4 inches apart.

with the engine at normal running temp, read the top side of the stick. the bottom side will look full which is not correct. If you are the low notch, you will need about 1.5 quarts to get to the top notch, but I only put in one quart first, then run the car a few miles and then check it again to top it off. Easier to add than remove.
