Default Exhaust Tip Question

My car came with B&B exhaust system but I'm not a big fan of their exhaust tips. I prefer the stock tips so I might find a pair from Porsche salvage shops. One question though, were stock 964 turbo exhaust tips chrome? Or were they black?

You can polish the stock tips but they don't shine like the B&B's will. If I might suggest; talk to Stephen at Imagine before you cut up that muffler system.

FYI - I have the B&B muffler and wastegate pipe set-up and I think to change the tips on both sides would mean the complete removal of the B&B muffler and wg pipes as the tips are integral. You'd then need to re-install the OE system (although you could still by-pass the cats and the stock muffler) and then fit the OE tips. Coincidentally I was discussing that yesterday with a couple of fellow 965 owners who both have different set ups to each other and me.

I was with Tim (tjr) yesterday and we compared his B&B tips with my current fabspeed oval tips, and they are thge same size and shape - you really couldn't tell the difference. That said there seem to be different shape B&B's - another friend has smaller ovals.

As far as the OEM tips, I recently contacted Porsche and a replacement tip is expensive (c.£300 each!) and they now only come in black. Most i have seen including my own old ones are chrome, although I don't know whether many owners did it themselves.

Thanks for all the feedback!

No worries I will not cut the B&B muffler nor the B&B wastegate pipe. Instead I will have my local exhaust shop to make me a new muffler and wastegate pipe and weld in the stock tips.

Here is the complete custom exhaust system I had in my 964 C2 with stock exhaust tip welded in:

The above system only cost me USD1200 complete with header, muffler and installation. Afterall labor is much cheaper over here in Hong Kong.

I guess I will contact all the Porsche salvage yards to see if I can get two stock tips. I will spray them black and weld them into a custom muffler and wastegate pipe. Stock look but aftermarket performance

Also if any of you is interested to buy my second hand B&B muffler and wastegate pipe let me know

Damn,

I can't believe you let that C2 go. So much work and it looked great.

I have seen turbo tips in both black and polished SS. My 94 came with polished SS my C2 came with black. It may have depended on the exterior color of the car or what was in the bins that day can't tell for sure. I found the SS lip on the turbo was twice as long as the lip on my C2 although overall length of the unit was identical.

Mine was originally black, but I had them polished. Very nice. They are stainless steel painted flat black from the factory. After 4 years, the muffler side's tip is a little yellow as compare to the wastegate side.

Yea Anthony I was sad to let the C2 go but just couldn't resist in owning a 3.6 Turbo

Sonny good point that you brought up. I have concerns too that the muffler side tip will get dirty/yellowish more than the wastegate side especially when I will not have a cat. Hence I'm leaning towards the black tips...

I had polished stainless tips standard (see only pic I can find) a little blue magic twice a year kept them looking clean. I have since switched to techart tips in stainles and they need the same attention.

Here's my new exhaust system. Basically my local exhaust shop used an aftermarket muffler and weld in the stock exhaust tip. The setup is just like the B&B system.

Very happy with the result as the car has the stock exhaust look but indeed it actually has an aftermarket system. Sounds good too! Will respray the exhaust tips to semi-gloss black (now they are flat black) tomorrow and hopefully will take some more photos.

Cheers
Kev

kev,
The tips look alot like the OEM, just a different angle. Nice.

My Fabspeed tips (big ovals) have gone yellow and I don't really like the look.
I am saving up (!) for the Cargraphic quad tips now....

PS: That custom 964 job looks great, and so cheap :-)

I have the Cargraphic quad tips and any SS tip will yellow over time. Just a little polish with Blue magic and they look like new.

+1 on what cobalt said; my tips are purplish gold (from breathing fire at the track) and I can buff them out with a fine grit sand paper using my 3 inch orbital polisher...
