There was some discussion of it here: https://rennlist.com/forums/964-turbo-forum/347612-how-to-check-ignition-timing.html

Pros: Likely to make the engine feel livelier under non-boost conditions, probably slightly better pick-up.
Cons: Unless you know what you're doing, advancing timing on a forced induction motor (especially one with as rudimentary control systems as ours) is rather hazardous - timing is retarded as standard in order to reduce the likelyhood of detonation.

I think anyone wanting to alter timing would be well advised to get their fuelling checked and their car rolling-road tested.

If it works anything like the roock version you will be pleased. On my 3.6 bog standard if you changed at the 6800rpm redline you still had half a second of lag. With the mod you can change at 6000rpm and there is no lag. Porsche backed the timing off in case people tweeked the boost a little.

I was told you need to grind the gearbox housing where the sensor is installed for fitment. I am installing mine shortly.

Its apparently a 10 degree timing increase and 10+ RWHP on the dyno.

Is that a fixed +10 deg. increase across the rev range? Doesn't sound like a sensible idea to me, for a mere 10bhp.

Forget the numbers it is how it feels. 10 bhp actual can feel like 50 bhp at the seat

That looks like you need to remove a lot of material from the gearbox housing from the photos in the pdf instructions.

hi,

yes, it says 6.5 deg timing advance. therefore the diameter of the flywheel has to be about 280 mm, circumference 880 mm / 360 = 2, 444 mm per degree. support of the fvd holder against stock is 16mm / 2,444 = 6.5454 degrees.

and yes, it´s a fixed add on to stock advance ocross the rev range.

according to the shop manual ignition advance has to be 40 deg from 3000 rpm upwards at 400 mbar ( no boost) and 21 deg. at 1.750 mbar (boost), which in my opinion is not that conservative.

considering that the 965 does not have any knock control system i tend to recommend gaining more performance by keeping the gastank nearly dry or the passenger seat empty or the drivers-bmi under 25 ....

fritz

I always run 97 plus fuel, might be an issue on lower octane, but I think its a mod worth doing. Maybe wait till its due a clutch.
