Why do people think the RS is so much different? Isn't it just a few changed settings and around 40lbs?
Hemi - I've driven both and the GT3 has a different feel and a couple of driver aids. The 965 feels more raw and elemental to me and the GT3 turned a faster lap time and felt like a Sunday drive while doing it. I guess that means I could've gone faster. I love the shape of both cars as they represent their own eras of 911, but I still would only want a new GT3 as a second Porsche - not as my only one. That should probably get someone to call me crazy.

The RS is just coolness factor - not worth the extra $$, but it will probably appreciate in price.
Anyway, I think having both is the way to go, but the GT3 would be my track car more often than not.

It would be great to have both but I admit I'm a sucker for GT3s. If prices ever tumble suitably I could see myself chopping the turbo in for a Mk1. There's something about a free-revving n-a motor that can't be beaten.

KP don't do it. I've raced 996 supercup cars and they are incredibly preficient in what they do. the power is linear, they are not incredibly quick but they are a tool to do a job and it is still a 911. I'm sure if you drive one you'll stay with the 964.

HMMM, according to EVO mag the 997 gt3 and 997 turbo both accelerate to 100MPH in 8.7 seconds, If we use simple scientific deduction based on this scenario we can assume that my 964 3.6 turbo is faster than a new twin turbo, IM SURE YOU AGREE THIS IS BOLONY.
I must say i am very intrigued since i am sure it was not down to driver ability, I know the owner's abilities and could hear some pretty rapid shifting. All i can say is that my initial feeling after requesting a drive in the gt3 was that it felt very lethargic at low revs, and almost definately did not feel as fast as my 3.6. Certain Few gas stations over here sell a premium "ultra" grade which has a considerably higher octane level. I make sure i only fill ultra, and i am sure my friend uses the bog standard octane fuel....wonder if that has anything to do with it.

The 997 GT3 is a rocket ship. If you were pulling two lenghts on that car, the driver of the GT3 was just letting you. A for the RS, worth every penny!!! The suspension and wider body are worth the premium. Plus you can get the full Euro version, which we can not get here. CGT seats, rollbar, lexan. AWESOME.

I agree the 996GT3 was a bit disappointing on the street. My slightly modified turbo is considerably faster in straight line and feels like it would be as fast through the turns. I found the GT3's to be rather twitchy and made me uncomfortable below 5k rpms. The GT3 however was a much easier car to drive and as far as thrill factor left me wanting.
This is my comparison for the street, for the track the GT3 is going to dust a 964 turbo unless you have a serious suspension set for track only use and are one hell of a skilled driver.
Actually the 964 3.6T is only rated at 0-100mph in 9.5 seconds so yes they are faster out of the box. But that is not bad considering the 3.6T is rated at 360hp vs the serious Hp numbers rated fro the 997GT3 and 997TT. I had used my GTimer to test my turbo and I had recorded 0-100 mph times in my turbo as low as 9.0 seconds with a botched start and a 0-20 time of 2.1 seconds. I am sure if I could get the car to hook up I can see 0-100 times of 8.7 seconds or quicker.
Now getting back to the 997GT3RS. We had our first AX event at the meadowlands yesterday and someone showed up with a new 997GT3RS in a beautiful orange black combo. The car did not do all that well but all it had to do was sit and look good. I have not said this about any of the newer 911's since the arrival of the 996 but what a gorgeous car. The wider rear track and CF rear wing with blacked out wheels was just breath taking. It sounded great when he got on the throttle although lacking at idle. From what he said it is a far superior car to the 996GT3 and if it drives equally as good as it looks it is destined to be a classic. I would be torn between my turbo and the RS. If it wasn't for the new OBD 3 systems and costly out of warranty repairs associated with these cars they might be able to convert me.
We had something called the Caymen Challenge yesterday where we had a new Caymen on Hoosier A8 tires where 21 of us had a chance to test out the car. I was amazed at how forgiving these cars can be under such hard cornering. I shaved a full second off my best time in my C2 and made more mistakes. Incredibly capable and fast through the turns, It was a blast to drive at the AX event but to be honest I could not enjoy the car on the street. As a track/AX car it is fun but on the street it would bore me to death. I think the GT3 is great but the Caymen's balance would make a better car if it had the power of the GT3.
In either case for the street I am sticking with my old school beast. For track or AX the newer cars offer so much more but are only fun because the car drives for you instead of you driving the car and therefore makes your times better with less effort.
