Default Melted wire in loom to fuse board !

Hi

I was getting the AC checked and the garage lifted the fuse board to check the wiring for the AC control fuse.

While doing that they found that one wire to terminal 31 on Relay 34 (ABS) has burnt off insulator leaving the exposed copper wire for a good few inches running back into the loom. It could be exposed deeper into the loom.

There were no warning lights showing a problem with the ABS (although the brake warning light on the cluster was the last to go out). I never noticed whether the ABS was working or not as it never activated during hard braking but I can't say I slammed on the anchors either.

Obviously this is an electrical fire risk and I will get it investigated by the Porsche garage but do you have any thoughts what may have caused it? It does not look recent so may have been there for a while and may have been caused by a fautly relay, faulty ABS unit or something similar. Any suggestions on what to check or look for?

If I pull Relay 34 to avoid the risk of a short on the bare wire, will the brakes still work OK (but without ABS)?

Sorry if this is a flood of questions but I have ordered Adrian's book and the Bentlley manual which have not arrived yet and would have shed some light onto what this wire does.

Cheers
Paul

If you pull the ABS rely your breaks will work but not very good, these cars use lots of breaking force at the rear when the ABS is working, but when it's disconnected very little breaking will be done at the rear for safety reasons. The speedo will stop working as well.

I have no clue on what caused your problem, never heard of it.

Thanks. To avoid any power going to the ABS system I removed the fuse to the ABS and yes you are correct, the speedo stopped working and brakes felt a bit softer but still work. It is in at a specialist to get it checked so I will see what happens and keep you informed.
