Of course they are! In my eyes the 3.3/3.6 Turbo 2 is the 911.

In 11 years of driving, there are only two cars that no matter how long I have owned them, manage to put a smile on my face every single time that I have driven them.

Both of them are cars I lusted after in my early teens - I now have both.

The first is my 1974 mk1 Ford Escort which I will never sell, the second is my 1993 3.3 965. Completely different, but both absolutely perfect in what they try to do.

The only thing left that would complete my life would be the ownership of an Austin/Williams MG Metro 6R4......

Good taste with those 3 cars, although I think the simpler looking Mk2 Escorts look better IMO.
I would want to black out the windows of the Metro to create a sleeper !

I had someone try to race me in a Metro while in my carrera, I left them for dust

You guys say we have it good, yet you have these models availbale to you that we don't even hear about over here. Mostly because they don't meet DOT requirements but I would be interested in hearing more about these cars.

Metro or Metro 6R4? I've never seen a single example of the latter on the road; one or two Stratos, RS200 etc... but never an actual 6R4. I can imagine a Metro trying to race -any- kind of Porsche would be a rather amusing sight

There's one on Pistonheads now for £28500... http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/71589.htm

It was up for sale at the same time as my turbo, and I have to tell you that I was very, very, very tempted by it; completely impractical, but wow... owning one of those is an ambition for me!

Anyway, Anthony; the Ford Escort mk1 and mk2 were originally affordable 2 and 4 door family saloon cars produced by Ford in UK and Europe. The mk1 was produced from 1968-75 as a successor to the previous 105/Anglia. The mk2 came in 1975 and replaced the curved lines of the mk1 with updated body panels and a slightly more angled look - but was effectively the same underneath.

1600 2door mk1 'mexico'

standard 4door mk1

RS2000 2door mk2

... and the type thing I like to see them doing....
mk1 rally car...

mk2 rally car...

Neither have anything to do with the US Ford Escort.

The configuration is an inline 4 cylinder driving the rear wheels via a four speed gearbox, propshaft, solid rear axle with multi or single leaf springs and telescopic gas dampers and rear drum brakes. Front suspension is macpherson struts and drums on the very early small engined models and disc brakes & calipers on most others. Front and rear anti roll (sway) bars on most models.

Not exactly earth shatterying technology, even at the time, but as with most things Ford, they were heavily used in motorsport and were extremely successful in most styles of racing (especially rallying).

Engine varied from 1100, 1300 and 1600 pushrod, overhead valve 'Crossflow' versions, some with sporty heads and valves, a 2000 8 valve overhead cam engine in the RS2000 sports model (this is the 2000cc 'Pinto' engine), a twin cam 8 valve engine based on the 1600 pushrod bottom end and a head design from Lotus (the Lotus 'Twincam' engine), and a twin cam 16 valve engine based again on the pushrod bottom end but with a head designed by the mighty Cosworth; the BDA - this was used on the mk1 and mk2 RS1600 & the RS1800 and eventually turned into the BDT which powered the ferocious RS200 Group B super car.

The mk1 and mk2 are the most successful rally cars ever, and hold the title to this day - they are still used competitively in virtually everything outside WRC. They make great driving cars becuase they are so light (a 2 door, 1300 model was factory quoted as 820kg) are very simple to work on, and there is an absolutely enormous fan base and aftermarket parts supply for them. Even better Ford has so much cross parts compatability across all of it's models and 30-40 years of production that it's relatively easy to install a modern engine (gearboxes up until last year still used the same bolt pattern!).
They are also huge fun to drive

As for the Metro 6R4, well, that's a while different story. The original Austin Metro was supposed to be a replacement for the Mini, never a brilliant car, but it sold reasonably throughout its lifespan. Anyway, Austin wanted a car to compete in the Group B rally events of the early 1980's... they contacted Williams F1 and came up with the idea to spaceframe a Metro and squeeze in their Rover V8 in the back... it eventually morphed into a completely new 3.0 24v V6, mid mounted, with a Hewland transaxle and full time 4wd. Some say it was a pig to drive, others have called it superb... but it was apparently twitchy due to the short wheelbase and huge power (400bhp+ in full spec). Anyway, it never got a chance to prove itself, as along with the RS200, S1, and others, it was killed after Group B was banned after multiple specatator deaths in the early 1980's.

It's still used very successfully today however and is a very fast and capable piece of machinery.

An interesting side story from the 6R4 is that after they were stopped being made (250 had to be made to be homologated for Group B, but there were enough parts left to make quite a few more 'Clubman' spec cars; cut down 250-300bhp versions), the 3.0 24v V6 engine was used as the basis for the Jaguar XJ220 supercar, albeit with two big ol turbos

The mk1 and mk2 Escort is kind of like the national obsession. Everyone remembers fondly back when their parents or grandparents owned one, and can remember them winning races and rallies years ago on the telly ;-)

Incidentally, I like to use mine as god intended, so this is what I do with my 33 year old example....

Nice. The Metro that tried to race me was not a 6R4 which is why I left it for dust

If that one for sale had blacked out windows most people would see it and laugh thinking it was some POS.

Include the Porsche 959 in that too.

I'm not so keen on the RS2000 front but I do like the MK2.

I nearly bought a Mk2 but didn't as I was worried about rust. Never drove one or a Capri

Very Interesting stuff. I have never seen any of these before and to be honest my first thoughts were the Escort but your first comment claims no relationship.

Reminds me somewhat of the Renault turbo they had out around that time.

Thanks for the education.

Mike,

It was very nice meeting you and your wife. Next time I will have to get my better half to join us and bring the GTS. This way they can be boared together.

hope to see you around

Yep, quite similar in body style and the type of arch/wing extensions, plus they both came from pretty modest front wheel drive city/town cars.

I had a MG Metro, I fitted a Janspeed exhaust including manifolds & a K&N air filter. Stock the car had 72bhp. I couldn't afford a MG Turbo...

I also remember seeing the Gordini Renault 5 Turbo, I think these were very rare.

Hahahaha, my first car when I was 17 was a 1983 A-registration MG Metro Turbo

Of course, I loved it!
