90 C4 versus 92 Turbo, is it worth the $20K jump
There is a real nice 92 Guards Red Turbo with low miles on Ebay for about $46k with a dealer. Assuming it is mechanically sound, is it realy worth the $20k jump versus spending about $6000 for mods on my very nice C4. Interested in hearing about your motivators going this route.

Don,
The car looks very sharp from the pictures. You say low mileage? How low?
I have never driven a a 964 NA before so I can't tell you directly if it is worth it or not.
But I will say this. Prior to my C2turbo I had a '97 Carrera S (993 C2 widebody), I would pick my C2turbo over the C2S anytime. I would not go back even though the C2turbo is 5 years older.
Normally aspirated cars and Turbo cars are very different. You have to drive it for yourself to make the right decision for you. If you love a good kick in the back and like torque, you will love the Turbos. But keep in mind that the response is very different, slower at first and then things happen very fast after that.
Let us know what you decide. Welcome to the darkside.
Regards,
Sonny

Don,
Talking about driving a 964 Turbo, is a little like talking about sex. Its sounds exiting until you actually have sex; then you don't want to ever stop doing it!
If your idea of a great car is one that handles well and can be driven fast, your current buggy will do just fine. However, if you want an adrenaline rush everytime you press on the accelarator, your into Turbo Land!
Good luck with your decision.

Sonny, the car has only 30k miles which I have not yet verified. The price looks fairly reasonable at $46k. I also had a 993 C2 widebody, while a great running machine and low maintenance, I do like my '90 964. The thought of another 100 HP in a Turbo 964 is very enticing.
Mike, at my age, I think the turbo would be more like Viagra than adrenaline. Thanks guys for the feedback.

Don,
I drove a ton of 911's before I settled on my '88 930...I drove a several 964s, 993s, 996s, 911 Carreras, and a C2Ts.(I ended up choosing my '88 because I personally think the original Turbo is just so damn sexy).
My advice would be to DRIVE a turbo and let the experience answer your question about the $$$. Everyone on this board is going to say that the extra money is worth it. There is NOTHING like looking over at your passenger with a knowing, sh*t eating grin as the boost builds and watching their face go from "this is cool" to "O SH*T"!!! NOTHING.
The Turbos are completely different beasts, and I will take it even one step further, the RWD 911 Turbos have a feel all their own... You should drive one, or do like I did when making a decision and drive as many as you can get your hands on. You will find that if you like violent exceleration, the Turbo is the ONLY way to go.
Good luck with your decision!!!!

Cajun,
You "Dark Side" P-guys are really entrenched with your Turbos. I think I could be easily transformed, although my 964 brothers have done some wonderful things with their machines. My decision will be to either belly up to the bar and shell out the cash for $6000 of mods (excluding engine upgrades) or invest in a stock Turbo for $20k more than what I have in mine now. I think I need a test drive as suggested.

A modded NA vs stock 3.3 I would say not to much difference in performace but you like mods? Then after a while youll want more and then I would add on another 4-5k on some nice mods ... but then theres a big difference vs what NA could do and I would say its worth it. So perhaps think about that and maybe pick up one thats already modded.

Also think about the resale value of the 2 cars. C2turbos will not depreciate much further. Although in your case if you get this car and start driving it a lot you will loose some of its value because of the increase in mileage.
It might be better to find another clean C2turbo with a little higher mileage and just enjoy it. It will be hard to get your money back once you have modded your C4.

Sonny

Just an FYI, I called on the car Don has pictured. It has had a few modifications including exhaust - which is great, however, they do not have the original parts. Again, just an FYI....

Stummel,
I don't have a 993TT but I do have a 996TT in addition to my 964 Turbo. The 996TT is a more competent car with better 0-60 time, higher top speed and 4-wheel drive.
The 964 Turbo is more FUN to drive! The single-turbo boost is a great rush. The two-wheel drive also makes it easier to find its limits, adding to the fun.

First off, you came to the turbo crack house when you asked this question. We are addicts of the ultimate Porsche single turbo street car hit...
Secondly, I've owned both a '93 C2 (somewhat similar to your C4 in that it is a NA 964) and now my Turbo 3.6 (not entirely the same, but not entirely different than the 3.3 C2 Turbo). Is the turbo worth $20k more? Yes. Done. Buy it.
Now where did I put that boost bong...
