It would be worth 10x the $20. How do they fake out the sniffer test? I guess they could connect a known good car to the sniffer equipment and enter in the registration data for the modified car. Is the emissions test required in your county?

Why couldn't you just leave it in the neighborhood of the tailpipe? Is there a sensor (like a thermocouple) that detects location?

I would easily pay $100 every year to not have to modify my car - if someone knows someone, PM me.

Sort of. The big crack at the wastgate pipe has been welded up twice. There are still cracks inside the heater boxes which can't really be fixed. I plan to get some custom inconel headers this winter. Where it's really noticeable is below 4500rpm, where the car is just a dog. Once you get above 4500, the turbo is flowing enough air that the leaks don't seem to matter as much. Coming out of slow corners, I literally get pulled by E class 964s and 944 turbos .

I own a MY83 930, it's a Euro version with no cat. While living in NC, I had the car inspected few times with flying colors. Now I live in Atlanta, where emissions are very strict, and the car passes the rolling smog test without a problem.
If your car is tuned properly, you should pass the smog test. As far as the cat converter, I wouldn't worry about it. Most inspectors have never seen a 911T to know what to look for..

I live in Houston and have a '91 T. Mine has no cats and I get it inspected every year. I have my mechanic put a modified C2 cat on in place of the muffler. Run it across the street and "hey presto"
The other alternative depending on how much you drive is to get a state exemption if you drive under 5K per year.

Maverick,

Who is your mechanic? I'm in Houston as well, and struggling to pass WITH cats. I'm having difficulty on the 25mph ASM test. I may ultimately try to get the exemption, but that is a bit of pain as well.

From Bad News to Good News: Effective January 1, 2006, in NC only vehicles 1996 and newer with OBDII will be subject to emissions testing (through the OBDII Port). The sniffer test is going away for vehicles 1995 and earlier.

Whew!

Special thanks to Pete who went out of his way to help a fellow Rennlister!
