Default AFR/EGT best location for sensors

I would like to install a AEM wideband air fuel ratio gauge and EGT gauge, where in the exhaust is the best location for the sensors on the 964 turbo,

Default as fas as possible…

i mounted mine years ago in front of wastgate. perfect readings but lamda dies in month. i only use it for short tests since then. so no matter.

better as far behind the turbo as you can. temperature is much lower there.

im assuming the egt sensor is better closer to the turbo outlet,
Any idea if I have to remove the headers to weld in the sensor bung or is the sensor further down from the headers

Thanks, not ever had the bumper off so was not sure how the set up was, makes sense now, I managed to get hold of some instructions and it advised to stay away form the exhaust outlet, as to close and the heat can damage the sensor, has your sensor done many miles in its current location
The EGT sensor on the other hand I believe is better closer to the exhaust outlet

On my set up - stock exhaust except Fabspeed cat bypass - had the bung for the wide band installed on the cat bypass pipe about 18 inches (going off fuzzy memory) from the turbo.

According to AEM, 18 inches is the minimum form the turbo, I assume to prolong the lifespan of the sensor.

took the bumper off today.
I am not sure where I can put the sensor, if I do it after the turbo outlet and before the silencer, the sensor will; only be 6.5 inches away from the hot exhaust gases. Aem advise minimum 18 inches
The exhaust has a box which has been tilted on its side and the tail pipes tig welded to this, see pics, I cant really put it in the box, would putting it at the beginning of the pipe for the tail pipes be any good or is this to close to the open atmosphere

The metal tin has corroded quite bad, any idea if this is still available

Wow! That's pretty bad. I took mine off last year and cleaned/painted/repaired most of it, but none of it had anything more than a couple of pin holes in it.

I couldn't find an entire set of engine tinware replacements. Certain bits are available, but not the whole set, it seams. Fortunately none of mine was as bad as that.

As removed

Side panels blasted and repainted

Rear tin blasted, with a couple of pinholes welded, and repainted

Also, that's the most bizarre exhaust I've ever seen on a Turbo. It looks homemade?

I take it that your left hand tail pipe is not connected to the turbo wastegate, then?

lol, definitely not a homemade exhaust, it is a full stainless steel, hayward and scott exhaust, cost nearly 3k and that was over 10 years ago, I believe that included the headers, i was surprised to se how it was built, once i had removed the bumper, not how i would have done it.
Any ideas where best location is to put the afr sensor
There is another bracket where the wastegate has a third tail pipe, currently vents to the atmosphere and when the wastegate opens it makes a hell of a noise, hence why they call it a screamer pipe

Not sure why the tin ware is so rusted, car hasnt seen rain or damp in 15 yrs, previous owner also kept it in a garage

911 2, I am curious as to what climate/country your car resides? I have never seen rust like that before unless severe salty/moist environment. In my opinion, the "tin" surround the engines were not galvanized steel. This along with the warmer temperatures near the muffler and turbo cause accelerated corrosion.

Further, who installed that exhaust and who owned that car at that time? Just WOW!!! That tin was badly corroded when that exhaust was installed and they just let it go. I would not treat a Yugo like that.

The tin is replaceable and they are still available. It is not that difficult to remove and replace while the bumper is off. You should replace it. The bolts around the turbo are also really gone, take this opportunity to replace them.

Regarding the sensor location. I would contact the exhaust manufacturer, they should be able to weld a bung on the backside of the muffler that is further enough from the turbo.

FWIW: I have bought at least 1,800 Big rigs/diesel trucks for my business. And on all of them I have my guys install an EGT on the exhaust manifold and one on the outlet of the turbo. My guys climb mountain passes, so if you can imagine, you are climbing at full load, running at Peak Torque for 35min continuously. I want my guys to manage throttle to EGT and not abuse the engine and back-off if need be. This is a duty-cycle that no car will ever see. EGT that we use live up to 2,000F.
