Lola (my 965) stopped giving power on a giant freeway interchange with no breakdown lane yesterday, was luckily able to coast to the bottom without a truck taking her from behind and then just a little hop over a meridian to safety. No damage.
She's got no spark. Flywheel sensor is new last year. Overboost switch is new 5 yrs ago. Top 5 causes of no spark apart from dead EZ69?
Wicks, you physically pulled a plug wire and checked for spark?
additionally...
1) Check the wires in the back of the IC...nothing came loose, etc. I learned about that this hard way. and intercooler is really "grounded"
2) Your distributor cap did not come loose? Those 2 "tangs" that hold them down...
3) You don't have some goofy alarm system that failed?
I don't know if there is a parallel between a 930 and a 965: Past year in my '87 930 my car did the same thing as yours. I took my 85 year old father in-law for his first and last ride in a Porsche and the GD car just died on the side of the road. After a lot troubleshooting it turned out to be a short inside the tachometer that caused the Jetronic unit under the driver's seat to shut down...
Yep, no spark. Was an instant and complete shut down with full warning light christmas tree. First thing I checked was those wires, and the distributor etc. Nothing out of place or un plugged, no alarm system - nothing not factory in this car and nothing changed recently. Short in the tach, crazy, will add that to the list...
Perhaps too simple: Battery voltage OK?
(I know that these are ancient cars, but on all my newer cars they are so sensitive to battery being fully charged, or car goes down with all dash lights fault light On)
Check if the EZ69 has voltage supply. The power comes from the turbo control unit (965.618.130.01) under the driver's seat. Ground is applied to the ignition relay via pin 8.
So either measure whether there is ground when the starter cranks or try connecting pin 8 to body ground.

Was wondering if these fancy looking coils ever die. Guess they do? Might assume the original one is what's still there...
Do you mean fry as in stop the EZ69 from working temporarily? Or kill it, like dead dead. If bad coil can fry the EZ69, I'm replacing coil even if it isn't the cause.
i know some guys over here with this issue. dead ez and it was roasted inside. coil was dead in all cases. so may be the coil was the start point or a follow up. the high voltage that roasts the ez internals has to be strong. so it points to coil short.
Whether the ignition coil has a short circuit can be used to determine by a simple resistance measurement (between the primary and secondary circuit), takes a minute. Unfortunately, you can only get there properly if the intercooler is removed.
Car is with Bill Manuel now, everything tests good except... the bloody EZ69. Anybody got a spare one they'd part with, or rent to me? Always feared this day.
