Default Sunroof cable failure

Posted in regular 964 forum on this but in case anyone here knows about it on our cars, do we need to replace both the cables, and the guides? Or just the cables, do we leave the felt, remove the felt, etc...

It's recommended to change both cables and all the little plastic guides together and all the sunroof seals.
The felt stays on.

I repaired the sunroof on my 911 SC so I can vouch for this thread. The main difference is that the replacement cables are 964 parts so they shouldn't need any modification to fit in the guides. There's a sound deadening panel that covers the sunroof motor which needs to be removed to access the motor.

Also looking at this one, rear zipper / motor removal to get the sunroof to move back, maybe better to get sunroof headliner off sans damage... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...placement.html

Do you mean these "guide shoes"? There's not a lot of plastic in there I can find on the chart... https://www.rosepassion.com/en/90156...sunroof-P13889

(Would rather get all parts in before I take it apart)

The headliner on the sunroof panel is only attached in the front. Once you can move the sunroof about two inches, you can pull it down and slide it out. You won't damage it.
As for parts, you only need a few (ignore 56 but you will also need 14):

Aha much thanks. But on second thought, decided I better look first… and the transmission case cracked apart. Better than the engine case cracking I guess. Which will eventually happen no? Maybe after we’re gone. . ($450 for this little thing hah)

Looking at the casting, I would say that's a very abnormal failure. Perhaps Cobalt will offer his opinion as he is the mag casting expert here.
Hell, $450 for a Porsche part is is about average.
But, yeah, I've never seen a sunroof gearbox fail. It's the cables 99.9% of the time.

Haha true. Air bubble in the casting maybe? In the old days I’d etch a bunch of grooves and do a JB weld on this (held the carb on my Citroen together for years) but too old for that now.

No, possible overstressed based on the fracture pattern. Cobalt says the casting is actually zinc or what the old timers call pot metal; the cheapest stuff you can use.
