964 engine cost??
Hi everyone, i was wondering, how much does a decent 964 turbo engine cost used? And does it fit in a 930 ?
Ive always been a 944 guy, but i have the opportunity for a 930 restoration and i was just trying to think about options. Rebuild original motor, upgrade motor, possible a later model motor, etc... I know the 930 engine is an expensive rebuild. (ive priced it out) How are the 964 turbo engines? I appreciate any help!

Tony,
While I'm newer to the 965's, I can't see how there could be any difference between the 930 and 91-92 3.3 motors and the 930. They are essentially the same motors carried over. The 3.6 motors do not have the dual plug heads, but their limited production (466 in the states) should mean they are inherently much more expensive than the 3.3 motors. I think logic says rebuild the 930 motor.

Oh really, ok, i didnt realize that. Well, another question for you guys then-
The engine only has 20,000 miles, kinda sad case. Very interesting find though.
I priced out a rebuild for OEM parts, etc... Would it be better while the engine is getting put back together to upgrade it instead? Maybe different pistons, or bigger turbo, etc.. ? Ive never worked with an air-cooled car, so i think its time i start reading up and browsing the archives!

It is always better to do it while you are in there. The labor cost will be the same, unless you are doing it yourself. It depends on what you want out of your rebuild. New cams, better/lighter fly wheels, porting, valves.... etc.
There are some differences between pre 91-92 Turbo engine and 91-92 3.3 turbo engines. I will let the more knowledgable people chime in.
Regards,
Sonny

Just FYI, I have spent over $10k on parts and machine work on my 930 engine rebuild. I am just about ready to start the first assembly of the engine. Although, not a completely stock rebuild, alot of the parts I have use are parts that should be replaced when doing a rebuild. It is very easy to spend tons of $$$$ on these cars doing the "while I'm in there" thing. The last C2T 3.3 engine I saw for sale sold for about $10k. 930 engines seem to go for $6k on up depending on condition. FWIW my 930 ran great, had good compression and leakdown numbers. I decided to do a valve job and disassembled the top end. I then decided to install new rings. Upon removing the cylinders, I discovered I had broken rings on ALL 6 cylinders. I was very surprised to say the least. That is how I ended up doing a full rebuild which has spiraled into a full EFI conversion.
There are some slight differences in the 930 and C2T engines but that has been discussed before.
