Purchase advices..
Greetings lucky ones!
Fadz996, a rennlist member and previous owner of a 996C4s, is waiting for his next 997 C4S order, which is at least a year away from now..
His addiction to Pcars still lead him to pay down for a 964 Turbo 3.6 1995 model, yellow color.. The car is being PPI'd by Porsche specialists here in Dubai tomorrow..
Needless to say the car is a piece of art, however we wouldnt mind your opinions on what to look for to make sure the car is not deffective.
For example I noticed only one (right) exhaust works on startup, i saw a lot of complicated piping on the left exhaust, but is this normal..
Advices really appreciated (quickly!) from the listers, thanks in advance..

The left exhaust is tied to the wastegate, that is fine that only 1 works.
The 3.6 is a 94 model year.
I dunno what else to look for?? Maybe find out when the last valve ajustment was because they need those every 15k miles and its expensive.

Make sure to do compression test and leakdown test for each cylinder. The number should be consitent across all six.
Other than that, make sure to check for smoke on start up, boost leaks, and no smoke then you floor the gas in say 2nd or 3rd gear. Have someone look from behind while you drive the car.
Good luck, and have fun,
Sonny

full leak down test on a warm engine! Speaking from experience, bad valves can cost a small fortune on the 3.6! The exhaust valves are 3X the cost of the valve on the 91-92. Apart from that, it really depends on how many miles are on the car. The dual mass clutch is good for 50,000 usually. If the car is being sold as a 95, there is a problem, and you may want to verify the VIN is actually for a 3.6. There have been cars converted to look like one, that are not actual 3.6's. If I recall, the yellow color is a rare car indeed. Check for smoke at the start up (bad turbo), look for leaks around the half shaft area. In general, look over the entire engine bay for signs of old oil. Its hard to say were it comes from due to the tornado effect in the rear end, but leaks generally require the engine to be removed unless you get lucky. I bought a "project" 3.6, and even I underestimated the cost to repair/replace, and upgrade. That being said, I would not trade it for a TT.

Normally, when you accelerate in 2nd or 3rd gear if the car smoke, then it has problem with the rings and/or exhaust valves.
It is a good test of all cars, not just Turbos.

Sonny

Sadly I parted company with my 1994 3.6 Turbo last November but a couple of items I would mention from experience! Heat exchangers and oil pipes especially the long, almost L shape one on the right hand side looking from the rear. You can see part of it in the rear wheel arch. Part of the pipe just became brittle through age, just the part was expensive and takes quite a bit to fit.
Enjoy the car. I do miss mine but I now have a new Boxster S to enjoy.
Regards Brian
