Question Replace or rebuild alternator?

What is the best plan with alternator replacement / rebuild for one of our cars? Have narrowed my parasitic drain down to alternator diodes. So, I am debating whether to replace or have the original rebuilt. I wouldn't want ANY old electrical parts left in it, so wondering if I should shelve it and put a whole new one in. Anyone have experience replacing/rebuilding alternator here? FVD has a nice looking new Bosch unit (although it's $1200!).

Much thanks.

I have a rebuilt alternator. No issues after 4 years and it cost $250 including core exchange.

Did you buy a rebuilt from one of the regular sources? Or have it done locally?

Got from Pelicanparts, then I found out I could have got it locally for 1/2 price.
Didn't make that mistake again when I needed a starter

If I had as many problems with alternator failures as the original poster I would be thinking about causes.

It could be that your ground connection from engine/trans to body is dodgy, bad grounds can cause alternators failures.

FYI right now (Feb 2026) there is a major problem with the entire stock of remanufactured/new Bosch alternators out there.
They skipped a crucial manufacturing step and didn't put the triple square socket in the end of the shaft. This means there's no way to tighten down the nut once the alternator is installed.
We've tried Pelican, FCP Euro, Worldpac, a bunch of smaller distributors... all have the same problem. There must be thousands of these out there without the proper hole.
Bosch is aware of the problem but has no timeline for a fix.

There is a good rebuild place in Landcaster PA where a lot of the NE guys use in the 993 forum to rebuild.
