Can anyone explain why our Turbo's don't use a tail light gasket?

As I understand it the gaskets were only used for MY's 89 and 90. They apparently trapped moisture and dirt causing damage so they swapped them out for the two smaller side gaskets to keep the lenses from sitting against the paint and making sure they sit properly.
