The PET shows it as old style through the end of -91 and the oval ones from 92- up. Although we know how that can be a partial truth. I am curious which version the 92 turbo had.
As far as removing the lower pans there are two the fuel pump cover and the long center tub cover it requires removing the fuel pump cover first 16 M 6 nuts and 6 M 6 screws. So 10mm socket. The studs that are part of the tub for the 16 nuts have a tendency to get rusty depending on how the car is stored and can break off if your not careful. I would hit them with some penetrating oil and let them soak if they look suspect.
Also a good time to inspect your power steering and fuel lines while you're at it. It is more work than you think if you don't have a lift.

Burning Brakes
I went in from below. I saw threads on the 964 Board about goin gin from above, tho, too. I removed the rear engine cover, tunnel cover and loosened the Fuel pump cover. Again - not hard. Just tedious.
