sunroof moving got loud
When opening the sunroof this evening it got really loud in the headliner, seems like maybe just behind my head and possibly to the left (it can be difficult to tell). It's still quite when closing. It's always been louder when opening than closing but tonight it sounds like something went wrong.. still works though.
can I expect complete failure? how difficult to tear into it?
Anyone had this with their 964?
thanks

Mine sounds like a box of rocks. I'm sure something is amiss but honestly I never use it. I don't care for sunroofs and would love to delete mine if I knew of a shop here in So Cal that could do so and make it look factory. I'm sure several of those shops exist I just don't know who they are.

@Rocket Rob: It's more than dirt. Failed completely now. Doesn't want to go to the closed position now and loud as all get out.
@911Jetta: Thanks so much for the pictures and links. The fact that others have done this tells me I probably do it as well. Trouble is...at this point in my life, it just doesn't give me the rewarding feeling it once did. (I'm also not set up for it like once upon a time) Just opening the zipper in the headliner was more than I wanted to do.
I took it by the dealership today and they still work on them. I'm gonna hand it off to them. There was a time when I wouldn't have done this. Wish you were here! I'd rather pay someone like you who knows what they're doing and is conscientious than to let the dealership do it. Maybe they'll do it right without damaging anything else too badly. (nice color on your 911 btw....and, OT, I've got a world map just like yours hanging in my office)
@rkwfxd: "...sounds like a box of rocks"...describes mine before it failed. Find someone to take it out. If it can't be done in S. California, it can't be done anywhere. Good luck and thanks

By the way, if you need to replace cables, the 964 cables have been superceded with 993 part. The 993 part won't fit with the cable tracks without modification or replacing the with 993 tracks. In my case, I chose to modify the cable end so that it fit the 964 track. Took me and my friend a few hours with a Dremel and a hand file.
Note: My info is a bit dated (circa 2008)

"A little-known fact is that Porsche is no longer supplying the original sunroof cable assemblies for the pre-1989 cars. The only new ones available are the ones for the 964 series (1989 C4 and later cars PN: 964-564-241-00), and need to be modified to fit into the earlier cars."
So, after reading about your experience, I called the Porsche dealership to see if they could still get this part. They said it's still in their computer, and they called Atlanta and they said they have them sitting on the shelf.
The reason I made sure they still make them is because they more than likely wouldn't be willing to jury rig something in their shop. But, they say all's well on the eastern front...bring it on in..

hey Rob...are you sure? the reason I ask is that this is a quote from one of the "how to" links mentioned above...

I just did my sunroof cables last winter. I had to hand file the slides before they would fit in the tracks. Not hard to do, just trial and error. I tried to get cables that would fit, but they were unavailable. Good luck with the repair.
