Go to...
... www.howstuffworks.com and type in "octane rating", MON/RON, etc.
You can find out just about anything on that site!
That's where I went to lookup info. on 100LL -vs.- 110octane Racing Fuel and MORE...a VERY informative site.
Let me know if that helped answer your question...there is LOTS of octane info. on there, including a writeup by Unocal 76.

Hmmmm, I recall reading a writeup that explained how RON + MON = Octane Rating.
Maybe it was somewhere else. My main interest was to investigate the "quality" of 100LL aviation fuel because it was rumored that it really was the equivalent of 106-108octane...but using VERY low quality "tactics" to raise the octane rating.
SO no dice for me, I buy straight 110 octane from a 76 pump at a local Texaco...for $4 a gallon.

The simple answer is it doesn't convert directly. In the USA RON+MON/2 = octane rating. So, if all you know is the RON, all you really know for sure is the US rating is lower. I know that for some of the 104 or 100 octane unleaded I buy, the difference between the RON and the MON is about 8. If this holds true for the 98 RON you are asking about, the US octane would be about 94.
