Default Ruff Idle>Cleaned ISV>No Idle

1990 C2 Tiptronic 60,000 miles

So I had a rough/low idle of about 700-750. (Maybe even 650-700 but no stalling.)

Pulled ISV, still had factory pinch clamps so I doubt it had ever been out of the car.

Interior did not look bad, was not all gummed up but did in fact have a bit of fine dirt inside.

Sprayed carb cleaner in it multiple times, shook it around, poured it out.

Interior of ISV was looking bright and shiny.

Let it sit for a good 30 minutes to dry out.

Re-installed ISV.

Car wont start unless I give it gas and will not idle. Tried letting it run for a bit and warm up. Still wont start or idle.

Any suggestions before I drop $250 on a new ISV?

Thank you

Default Idle

Check the idle micro switch.

Idle micro switch seems to be fine. It clicks when I press it and the throttle stop makes good contact with it.

i also destryed an ISV with cleaning in the past.

Alternative: buy one with the FIAT partnumber "60537836". It`s from an Alfa Romeo 33. Same **** but different price tag. This fits to both of my cars and was less than 100,-€ each....

Really?!

So you think by cleaning it with carb cleaner I actually broke it?

Well shoot, cleaning seemed to work for everyone else. Thanks for the tip on the Fiat part number.

The tiptronic idle speed is supposed to be 750RPM. Can you apply battery power directly to it (using a 9V battery works fine). I would never use anything stronger than rubbing alcohol on any electrical part, especially not brake cleaner and carb cleaner.

Did you check to see if you oriented the isv correctly? That would be my first check.

LOL No not quite. In fact one of the main reasons I decided to get an older car over another new one is so that I could have something to play and fiddle with.

AMF? Air Flow Meter? No, the only thing I have messed with is the ICV so that is all I have checked.

Yes Sir I did. After the car would not start or idle I pulled the ICV again and did a couple of things. Shake test - one second I could hear the valve freely rattling inside, the next second I could not, then I could again.

Same with a little voltage. It would click, click, click, then nothing, then click click again.

It's not consistent so I'm sure it's toast.

Seemed I read a number of threads of folks using Carb cleaner on their's with no problems. In fact, I read ZERO posts from folks who cleaned their ICV and THEN had a problem.

Your suggestion to use rubbering alcohol is a good one and I will take your advise in the future. Live and learn.

Yes I did, it was the first thing I checked as you suggested.

The new one should be here later this week. I'll post up the results. If this doesn't fix it I'll be towing it to an indy.

Have you follow procedures and used the Bosch Hammer System Adaptation?

Pretty basic step but just in case you (or the previous owner) forgot to do that.

And, yes, it took me 1 year and hundreds of $ to try the easiest solution last and realize the benefits of the System Adaptation.

If you're in SoCal I can set the idle adaptations for you.

Cool. I'm not far. Just down 605. Seal beach/Belmont Shore. Software I have is the scan tool one from Torre but it will reset idle adaptation. I also have durametric. Assuming it connects on takes all of 30 seconds.
