Default Need some advice on top engine mayor service

Hi there,

Car is a 1991 C2 cabrio with just 147.069 kms. Runs perfect, no issues, no oil leaks, no need to do any special repairs up to date except maintenance. No track or modifications, just driven around about 400 kms a week, mainly on highways.

While doing a routine maintenance, I notice “something” while taking out one spark plug: a piece of one head stud and its nut. Sparkplug of cylinder 2.

I would like to list what I’m are my plans and know what you think about it:
  • Drop engine.
  • Disassemble up to the cylinders.
  • Change:
  • 24 head stud (have yet to decide between OEM 993.101.170.53 or the ARP ones – big $$ difference).
  • 24 nuts.
  • Oil pressure and temperature sensors on engine.
  • Piston rings.
  • Clutch (just the disk), slave cylinder and hose.
  • Engine Bay Sound Proofing Damping Mat.
  • All gaskets involved.
  • Mayor service (I was doing it anyway).
  • Clean, check, paint, …. all around engine bay.

Am I missing something?

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks!!!

You have a good list. Also inspect all of your rubber hoses (oil, vent & fuel), CV boots and engine mounts. When I last dropped my engine, I discovered a fuel line on the back of the engine had swelled up like a balloon and we about to burst.

Thanks.
Yes, I’m planning on looking everithing up, and hopefully it will.
Summer 2015 I did some work which involved engine mounts, minor oil leaks (distribution and valve covers and some other leaks), power steering, and CV boots.
Let see what I find!!!

Best of luck on the engine drop. Its a bit scary but once you do it, its not that bad in hindsight. Just take careful notes as you go and the reassembly will be easy. I had a friend help me and we did it. Let us know if you have any questions or need moral support.

+1 for inspecting all oil lines. Also, Porsche OE top end rebuild kit covers a lot of necessary gaskets and hardware. Be careful not to fall in to bottomless pit of "While you are there"

Pfixit has an extensive library of rebuild videos that I found helpful when I was doing mine.

Shop manuals are absolutely necessary.

Thanks!

If you plan on removing the pistons fro the rods get the tool to help install the circ clips

I would get a full set of Head and Sump Gasket sets..much cheaper than getting them as and when you need them.

As mentioned earlier, I would change all washers when I check all hoses both metal and rubber.

If you intend to take out the rocker arms etc...you can't put it back without an oil leak unless you install a set of rocker arm seals ...I just learned the hard way...

Thanks all of you for the ideas and support, very mush appreciated.
@964Andrew: any link to those kits? I just found the ones for the gaskets, which I will get.
@JohnK964; not planning on removing the pistons.
@4th911: not planning on removing rocker arms, but if so I will change the gaskets, which are included on the kits.
And definitely, I will check all hoses, cables, ….
Thanks again!!!

Rocker seals won't be in a gasket kit. They are cheap in my mind a good investment not all that tuff to install and would give you a chance to inspect the rockers and the shafts. don't forget a narrow ring compressor there ain't much room below the cylinders when reinstalling the cylinders.

OEM Rebuild Kits
Bottom end - 930.100.901.04
Top end - 964.100.902.00

If you are not splitting the case you only need the top end. You. An get the kits directly from the dealer or many places online. Obviously there are many, many more parts you should consider replacing or rebuilding depending on their condition upon disassembly.

Thanks!
Andrew
