I am installing a 4HP-22HL tiptronic transmission into a '91 Volkswagen Vanagon. I plan on controlling the transmission using a standalone electronic control (e.g. Megashift).
I need the pinout for the connector on the left that connects to the solenoids. I also need to know which solenoid(s) control which gears. I have sorted out the connections for the selector switch on the right.
If anyone can point me to the needed information I would be Extremely Appreciative. Thanks.
For anyone else on a similar quest, I just located a manual on the Jaguar version of the 4hp22 and it shows the same connections for the connector pinout. It says the following for solenoid activation vs. gear.
It's been a while but I am looking at this project again. I have gathered information on how to do this but one sticking point is that I have not been able to find out is what the proper control is for the pressure regulator (called the solenoid valve modulation pressure in the image posted by mojorizing). How does it control pressure and what pressures does it need to produce under what conditions? Any information on that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Well, well, well. I have found someone who has embarked on a project much like the one I have started! I too am trying to use a Tiptronic Transmission but in my case in a 1961 Corvair Rampside Pickup. I talked to the guys at Megasquirt today as I wanted to purchase a Microsquirt computer to control the transmission. The question they had and the one I believe you may have answered in this thread was the matrix for what solenoid combination controls what gear selection. The question I have is in the diagram there are what I believe only two shift solenoids. Did you ever find a good theory of operation on that transmission? If so I would love to read it and get a better understanding of how it is controlled so that I can have a plan moving forward. I have already committed myself as the engine (Subaru WRX) is already connected to the Porsche transmission and both are installed into the truck. Maybe we can work through this together. Thanks
This project is still 'on the books' but since the time I started this thread it has not been the priority project. I have made no progress aside from gathering information that is fairly specific to my project (Vanagon installation). The current plan is to get working on the actual install some time in this coming summer (I currently have one other project to finish before it). I have been unable to find specs on the 'line pressure control' although I haven't looked all that hard. If anyone has pertinent information to share, it would be greatly appreciated.
The Rampside has been put on the road. I finally got it started (engine) about a month or so ago after the turbo and other associated plumbing was completed and for the most part everything came together nicely. I was able to find someone locally that could tune the EJ 20 and he provided me with an initial MAP for the build. I believe finding him was a stroke of luck because he had the Software that was needed to tune out the systems and associated codes that the recently released COBB tuning software no longer allows their tuners to do. EPA related). As for the Tiptronic transmission, the Microsquirt TCM has also worked well minus a little issue with reverse gear engagement. Since the software was geared towards the Land Rover (ZF Trans) the reverse solenoids combination is not the same in the Porsche version of that transmission. This hasn’t caused me any issues since I can (until the software gets updated) simply put the TCM into test mode and put the trans into reverse. I was able to put 1400 miles on the build before going on the Hot Rod Power Tour leaving Virginia Beach on the 11th and getting back on the 18th. We logged in 2700 miles in total and surprisingly the only time we had an unexpected breakdown was when our lead vehicle (Ford F150) had issues with his ABS. The quick fix was to unplug the ABS module, let the brakes cool down and get back on the road. All in all a great road trip.
