LSD Option?
Hello All,
I have found a 91 low mile C2 for sale that looks beautiful. The person sent me a picture of the Window Sticker. It is a pretty low option car. Nowhere on the sticker does it mention LSD. I thought this was an option? Was this standard on 91's? Or does this car not have it? If so I can't decide if that should be a show stopper for an otherwise nice car. I have sent an email to the owner as well.
Thanks for your input,
David

Trav, It IS an option! Not standard on '91's or any 964's, except (I'm guessing) Turbo's & RS's.
Get a peek of all the numbers/letters on the sticker up inside the "hood", it'll list what it came with.....in code. A lot of Folks know most by heart...if mentioned, OR check the archives. Do a "search" @ the top of this page.
If the cars What You want, & the mechanics are fine Don't let that stop your show, unless your looking to make some kind of Track machine
I happen to have both and 1 has it an one does'nt!
My 2 cents
Bill

Dave, the code number for a LSD is 220. Look on the label under the front hood for the options installed. Then do a search here for "options decoder" and it wiill take you to a site that will tell what they are.

Thanks Everyone.
I got it figured out. The car does not have LSD. Now I just have to decide if I still want the car. I probably won’t let it effect my decision, but I would appreciate any additional feed back from the group. Would it stop you from an otherwise great low mileage, one owner car? I guess I don't fully understand LSD, because I don't understand why they would build a Porsche without it. Is there any advantage to not having LSD???
Thanks All,
David

It's not related to Tim Leary! (sorry, I could'nt resist).
Limited Slip Differential.
You may miss it if -
You anticipate heavy snow driving....
Think a P-Car is Great for off the line "hole shots"
Or get pretty serious in Racing or DE's

It's my belief, from following these boards for 3+ years, is that the limited slip option is not that common. If this car in question is nice, you should snap it up quick and not let the lack of this option stop you from buying the car. As mentioned by Buckdr1 above, for normal street driving, you won't miss it.
Nice 964's (nice 911's from all years in general) are very hard to come by.

LSD basically limits the amount of wheels spin of one side of the wheel. so in the case of a rear LSD for the porsche or any car (Btw, lsd can be fitted on fwd cars too ie integra type-r), upon entering a corner, the inner wheel will spin faster than the outer wheel. without the lsd (open differential), torque may be transfered to the faster wheel increasing the problem of wheel spin. not good for at the limit cornering. so a good rear lsd will eliminate that problem and provide optimum traction.
perhaps adrian can explain better.

You can always fit an LSD if you become a track junky. Compared to all the other costs assocaited with frequent track use, an LSD won't break the budget. The lack of LSD should not be a deal breaker.

Piers, If your LSD sounds bad it could be that you have the wrong type of oil in your gearbox!?
I had it in my RS when I did the PPI.
My friend had the same problem on his 964 Turbo (they also have LSD).
Just change the oil and the sound goes away rapidly.

Hi Patrik
This has been discussed here before. The owner of garage which PPI'd the car, owns a 993RS himself, and says the noise is perfectly normal. But I will get oil changed next service.

Piers,
I know of two great Porsche garages that have put the wrong type of oil in 964/993 with LSD. In one case an oil that works in an 996 GT3 RS (with LSD) did not work in an 964 Turbo.
The LSD in my Turbo and RS does not make any sound at all. And yes, the LSD does work
And I do not remember any of the 993RSes I have taken a ride in making an "bloody awful" sound
