Default 92 Tiptronic issue

Something happened with my 92 tiptronic today. I was pulling out of a junction in 1st gear then manually shifted to 2nd and when I shifted into 3rd it went into neutral. Could not shift into D because it felt like it locked me out so I had to coast to the side of the road to stop. I managed to wiggle it back into D and drive home normally but every time I went into tiptronic mode it would just register as N on the dash, downshifting or upshifting did nothing. Thoughts please?

Do you have access to any kind of a scan tool to see what faults codes are ? A Durametric can check error codes from transmission controller under the drivers seat. Maybe that could show the issues.

unfortunately I don't. Kind of scared to take her for a drive now fearing that i might get stranded if the transmission decides to fully pack up.

Does it drive and shift normal if you just go from park to drive and does reverse work?

My first assumption is this is not that serious if the car is shifting fine in auto mode. I would pull the center console and have a look at the microswitches that control gear selection. It is always dirty in that area, and it is likely one of them is gummed up.

quick update. I took her out for a spin just now and everything was working as usual. I'll take it.

Did you disconnect the battery for anything before the first incident? I've found that once you turn the car off things kind of reset after disconnecting the battery.

I agree with nosubDan my tip on rare occasions seems not to recognize the manual gate usually from something I have done but it has always reset and worked just fine later always after just shutting the car off and restarting

No I didn't disconnect the battery. Just left it as it was then the next day started it hoping for the best.
