964/Cost of New Engine?
I am looking at a 964 that has a blown engine, allegedly has cracked cylinder head and broken connecting rods. Assume the wiring is fine. How much is a new engine? Anyone know. Thanks!

I don't think there are any "new" 3.6l 964 engines around anymore. I've seen some used in decent condition between 10K - 25K over the years. If you want something more than stock power output then you are looking easily 30K+ for custom build engine.
Thanks!

Without seeing it for myself, all I can offer is an educated guess based on some experience at this.
I would budget $20-25K for a complete, proper rebuild.

Have prices for used 964 engines really gone up that much? The last time I checked (probably 6-7 years ago), they could be had for $7-10k. I would check with LA Porsche Dismantlers, Autobahn Dismantlers, Oklahoma Foreign and DC Auto.
Here is a complete 993 engine for $14k:

For negotiating purposes, go with Steve's numbers. They should cover everything.
It could be a lot less, you won't know until it is opened up. A broken rod could ruin a lot of very expensive parts. I broke a rod in a race engine once (non Porsche) and all that was usable afterwards was the intake and carb.
The price for complete used 3.6 engines has risen to the $12-16k range, and you are rolling the dice with one.
